                  Job Description  Benefits  Supplemental Questions 
                 
                  The function of this position is to assist the Park Supervisor in the daily operations of Algonac State Park, W. C. Wetzel Recreation Area, and various Boating Access Sites. The individual selected for this position will be assigned to perform various types of operational and maintenance duties typically required in a state park and boating access site. The employee will serve in a commission designated position and be required to perform law enforcement duties according to Parks and Recreation division policies and procedures.

                  This position will require that the employee be able to obtain and hold a law enforcement commission. The employee must obtain a passing score on the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Physical Fitness Test within 90 days of being appointed/hired to the commissioned position.


                 
                   Required Education and Experience:  
                  Education
                  Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

                  Experience

                  Park and Recreation Ranger 6
                  No specific type or amount is required.

                  Park and Recreation Ranger 7
                  One year of experience in a park or recreation setting, or in the construction trades.

                  Park and Recreation Ranger E8
                  Two years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger 7.
                 
                   Alternate Education and Experience:  
                  Completion of at least 8 semester (12 term) college credits in natural resources, park management or outdoor recreation may be substituted for one year of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.

                  Completion of at least 15 semester (22 term) college credits in natural resources, park management or outdoor recreation may be substituted for two years of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.

                  The top candidates will be forwarded to the hiring manager for consideration.   Interviews will be set up locally for each of the vacancies the week of October 26th through October 31, 2014. You must be available during this time to be interviewed. If you are selected to interview, you will be contacted by staff. Once interviews are complete, only the top (3) candidates will continue in the process. Continuation in the process does not guarantee you will be selected for a position.    If you are contacted and are chosen as one of the top three candidates,  below are the next steps required to continue in the process. At any time, a failure in any of the steps will disqualify you from continuing in this process.
                  ·         Pass a background check
                  ·         Possess a valid driver’s license
                  ·         If you do not have a current passing MCOLES fitness test, you must be available to come to Lansing on November 17, 2014 and be able to pass the MCOLES fitness test.  The standards for the MCOLES fitness test  can be found on the MCOLES website at: www.michigan.gov/mcoles 
                   
                  *******Prior to taking the MCOLES fitness test on November 17, 2014, the selected candidate must see a physician and have the Pre-enrollment Physical Fitness Examination form completed by a physician.   This can be completed by a physician of your choice, MD or DO.   The fee for this will not be reimbursed. No candidate will be allowed to participate in the MCOLES fitness test unless they have provided a completed and approved physician health and screening form at the time of the test. If incomplete or missing, candidate will be disqualified.

                  ·         Those candidates who pass the MCOLES fitness test will be required to then pass a physical exam for the purpose of establishing sound fitness to participate in the DNR Law Enforcement Academy. This exam will be done in Lansing on November 17, 2014 and will be paid for by the DNR.
                  ·         The candidates who pass the above requirements will then be reviewed and a decision will be made which candidate will be selected for the vacant ranger positon for which they applied. Only one candidate will be selected for each vacancy.
                  All applicants must be willing to submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test at any point during this process and up to the point they are appointed to the Park and Recreation Ranger position. Civil Service rules determine subsequent drug and alcohol tests. Please review the civil Service rule at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/Reg2_84183_7.07.pdf.

                  Information provided in your application, resume, cover letter, transcripts, and any other documentation provided will be used to verify responses to the supplemental questions. Unsupported responses may not be considered further.

For our purposes, “Official Transcripts” must contain the college/university name and address, the degree conferred and date granted, coursework completed (especially if no degree granted), and the Registrar’s signature and/or seal.
