[nfbmi-talk] an old peckham job description

So, given the nearly two dozen essential functions of the posted position,
which is of a clerical nature, then why does there exist both the
requirement for close and distance vision, and a valid motor vehicle drivers
license and good driving record?

I can only conclude that exists as a non-essential job function, and is only
in their so the executive assistance can cart the executive around as
needed.

Reminds me of a blind person interviewed by the BS4BP BADP, and was asked if
the blind interviewee possessed a valid driver license, so the student
assistant could cart the division director around by car as needed, and be a
reader of print material for that director. I am sure it was intended as an
accommodation to the disabilities of the division director.

It further reminds me of the two MPAS Advocate positions, which summarily
disqualified an other highly quailed blind individual for the essential
functions of the advocacy position, because the blind person does not
possess a valid driver license. And MPAS refuses to release the surname of
the two individuals employed in the advocate positions. What does MPAS have
to hide? Who are the new hires in relation to other agency staff? Does the
public not have a right and reasonable and valid interest in knowing who are
the persons advocating for persons with disabilities?

These examples demonstrate the discriminatory barriers that face we the
blind in securing employment as highly qualified individuals for open
positions, and these are examples within entities that are charged with
serving and protecting the civil rights of disabled persons, especially the
highly qualified persons with disabilities who desire to work and be
independent. I guess these practices do not square with the WORK-TO-WELFARE
attitude andpractice of state government. Toward persons with disabilities.
Are we the collective blind to sit back as spectators, and simply go-along
to get-along with our civil servants. Where does such attitude and inaction
actually get us? Certainly not jobs or additional welfare benefit handouts!
And surely not a path to independence and security.
