Justice Department Announces ADA Title I Consent Decree with the University of Michigan
The Justice Department, along with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, announced today that it filed a
complaint
and
consent decree
in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan against the University of Michigan under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The
complaint alleges that the University failed to offer two employees with disabilities reassignments to available vacant positions for which they were qualified,
as a reasonable accommodation. The complaint also alleges that the University engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination by failing to offer reassignments
as a reasonable accommodation. The consent decree (subject to acceptance by the court) requires the University to pay a total of approximately $215,000
to the complainants in equitable and compensatory damages, adopt new policies, conduct training, and submit periodic reports.
