State library for blind honored Justin A. Hinkley, jhinkley at lsj.com LANSING
Michigan's Braille & Talking Book Library was honored recently by the
Library

of Congress for "excellence, innovation, and special achievement in
providing library service to individuals who are blind or have a physical
disability.

The state received the Network Library of the Year Award from the Library of
Congress' National Library Service for the Blind & Physically Handicapped

on Friday, the state Department of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs, which
runs the state library, said in a news release. The award came with a $1,000
cash

prize. The state's Braille & Talking Book Library serves 11,459 people and
circulated 607,856 braille and talking books last year, the news release
said.

The library touted a number of improvements last year, including a 300%
increase in participation in its summer reading program. "It was a year of
positive

change and reorganization that will enable us to serve more people," Edward
Rodgers, director of LARA's Bureau of Services for Blind Persons, was quoted

in the news release. "We are proud of our achievements that benefits our
current and future patrons.
