HI Kane, I'm just curious about what application you made to the state of Indiana. Was that some kind of grant application?

Lydia

Just copying some folks throughout the State of Indiana and the State
of Michigan, as well as a couple of other Federationist friends, on
this message which acknowledges my recent election as president of my
regional chapter. I included some Michiganians here because, at least
in theory, NFB of Michiana can include blind persons who reside in
Southwestern Michigan localities such as Niles, Buchanan, Dowagiac,
and even some farther cities such as St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, and
Watervliet that do not at present appear to be served by a chapter.

For anyone who wishes to know more about what we are doing or who
would like our help, please don't hesitate to reach out to this e-mail
address or to phone my cell: (574)386-8868.

Hello to all fellow members of and sympathizers with the National
Federation of the Blind of Michiana.

First of all, I am honored and humbled by the confidence all of you
who voted last Saturday, displayed in confirming me as the incoming
chapter president. Please trust me when I say that this title
"president" is nothing I ever coveted. It is, however, an
opportunity for me to re-state my commitment to one of the most worthy
causes we could support in this age: strengthening the equality,
opportunity, and security of blind persons throughout the Michiana
region as we come to live the lives we want, making a profound
difference through our own individual and collective efforts.

Having just assumed the title of president two days ago, I don't want
to spend a lot of time composing an essay about it. I would rather
spend that time conceiving of how we will invest effectively in
people, make life better for those who are blind in our communities,
then figure out how to replicate our successes in other regions after
we have achieved success here. None of this will be at all possible
without the dedicated partnership of many people, some of whom I don't
even know yet. So I thank you all in advance for your ttrust,
support, and sweat equity. And I thank Immediate Past President Matt
for having the confidence to support my election as president and for
displaying the perseverance and wisdom that has placed us in a
position where we have a fighting chance to succeed.

In addition to Matt, I wish to thank those who worked so hard on the
Grants Committee--particularly Andy Seabolt and Cesar Pincheira--as we
spent many hours poring over spreadsheets and fine-tuning the wording
which led to what we have heard is a 93% grade on our application to
the State of Indiana. Grade A work can be done only by Grade A
people, and I am honored to be joined by so many such people in NFB
Michiana.

Matt told us in the previous message who got elected to our 2016-2017
board of directors. Here are a couple of other points I am excited
about:

• 75% of our board is composed of blind persons.
• 50% are women.
• At least three out of our eight current board members speak a
language other than English. It’s not all the same language, either.
And this is not counting our Immediate Past President Matt Yeater, who
has proficiency in five ancient languages and who soon will become
fluent in modern Hebrew and Arabic.

Surely our variety of personal backgrounds and our linguistic
versatility will position us to serve an expanding, culturally diverse
region in countless ways in the coming years. I am excited. I can’t
wait to learn what will happen next. Thanks for riding along and
joining in our struggle.

Sincerely and excitedly yours,

Kane Brolin, President
Michiana Chapter, National Federation of the Blind
