He was a g4reat guy!
I went to leadership seminar in 1982, and he was one of the main speakers.
Even though his life story was very different from mine. His speech had a
powerful impact on me!

I want to point out that while Mr. Omvig was still alive, Gary Wunder wrote
a brilliant article summarizing James Omvig's stunningly successful,
decades-long tenure on the leading edge of the organized blind movement.
Sadly, I never talked with or met Mr. Omvig. But I feel I know him a little
bit from reading this. "A Modern-Day Pioneer in Our Midst: An Attempt to Say
Thank You to a Civil Rights Leader for the Blind" in The Braille Monitor,
February, 2016.

Good Morning Colleagues:
Please see the note below I just sent to the Iowa affiliate listserv. As I
receive more information I will certainly pass it on to this group. Our
thoughts and prayers go out to Jim's family, as we have lost a great pillar
in the movement. May his legacy live on in each of us!

Good Morning Federation Family:
It is with profound sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of a
great friend and colleague in the movement, Jim Omvig, early this morning,
April 27th. Jim has been an instrumental part of the Federation past and
present, and he was also a friend and driving force at the Iowa Department
for the Blind. His work in both of these arenas is well documented. His love
for the Federation, passion for the welfare of the blind, and drive to see
blind people live the lives they want will be truly missed. As I receive
more information, I will pass it on. Our thoughts and prayers go out to
Sharon and the rest of the family during this time. There is so much that
could be said about Jim, and there will be time for that. For now, let's
remember him as a friend, mentor, and brother in the movement always!
