Good Afternoon Federation Family,
I hope the holiday season has been restful for everyone. This time before
the New Year is ushered in is always a great way to begin planning. Whether
it is setting goals for your health and wellness, creating an accessible
virtual dream board for personal development or just speaking what you want
into existence; preparation can be a great springboard to turn your dreams
into reality. For blind Federationists in Michigan, goal setting can often
include steps that incorporate work with agencies, resources or vendors that
provide services or training on the way to reaching your objective.
The December NFBMI Soundboard discussion tonight at 8pm will include a
discussion on justification advocacy letters. Justification letters, for
clients of rehabilitation agencies like BSBP or MRS, are effective in
creating a tangible request to the agency a blind person is working with to
receive services while creating evidence of the client's (or customer's)
autonomy within the rehabilitation process. Whether a client is in a
vocational rehabilitation, independent living, or pre-employment transition
services program; knowing how to write and deliver a justification advocacy
letter is a transferrable skill that can set a blind person up for success
in several markets that require self-advocacy.
Tonight's Soundboard will cover the structure of a strong justification
letter, the best format letters are created in, tips for your letter's
content and how, depending on the type of customer you are, justification
advocacy letters are useful tools for Federationists to use for accessing:
* Professional Development Opportunities
* Additional Community-Based Skills Training
* NFB Employment Workshops
* NFB Student Programs
This workshop is a great way for members, and those who are not, to learn
about how soft advocacy can be the first step to creating possibilities for
you and those you care about. Please join me in the NFBMI Zoom room at 8pm
as we delve into these topics and so much more. I look forward to connecting
with each of you on this fruitful discussion as we cap off a successful year
of self-empowerment and advocacy readiness of the blind of Michigan.
