I have some great news to share today!
The legislative team is pleased to share the introduction of House Bill
6143, a bill which will require virtually every pharmacy in the state of
Michigan to offer accessible prescription labels. We stil have lots of work
to do,but this would not have happened without our meetings and advocacy in
Lansing and across the state.
Here's what we all need to do now.
1. The bill currently has 7 sponsors in the house, out of 110 members
total. Here are the 7 who signed on so far:
Julie Rogers (District 41)
Denise Mentzer (District 61)
Carrie Rheingans (District 47)
Rachel Hood (District 81)
Jimmie Wilson Jr. (District 32)
Penelope Tsernoglou (District 75)
Helena Scott (District 7)
Our goal now is to get as many other house reps as possible to cosponsor
the bill.
1. If you do not know your representative in the Michigan state house, go
to this website to look it up.
https://www.house.mi.gov/
2. Contact them via email or phone and ask them to cosponsor house bill
6143. You can briefly share how having access to accessible prescription
labels will help you be more independent or improve your quality of life. A
brief but powerful personal story can go a long way. Be polite and kind in
your email, and understand they may not reply right away.
If your rep is one of the 7 listed above, thank them for being a sponsor of
the bill.
3. If you hear back, feel free to send that to me or Mark to let us know.
Also let us know if anyone asks questions.
Time is of the essence. The legislative session ends in a few short weeks,
and this is a great opportunity to try to get this bill passed.
If you have contact with a state Senator who may be willing to introduce
the exact same bill in the senate, that is also very helpful.
We will keep you updated if hearings or other opportunities are scheduled
to offer testimony or feedback. Often these are held over Zoom.
Thank you for your support.
Best,
J.J.
