‘HACKIN’ IT’ TO DISCOVER PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS

Nearly 300 students from UM-Dearborn and beyond — stretching from California to New York to Canada — traveled to campus last weekend to take part in Hack Dearborn. The third annual hackathon was organized by the university’s chapter of the Google Developer Student Club. For more than 24 hours, teams worked together to create apps, web platforms and other software and hardware <https://t.e2ma.net/click/f8hlzn/vk2png/3aw413> projects, listen to professional speakers, and present their work. “It is incredible to see just how far it has been able to grow over these past few years,” says CECS student Shams Fatma Ahson, who helped organize the event for the past two years. “We started with just a small team of six people who had not much in common besides a goal to create accessible opportunities for people from varying backgrounds and skill levels in the technology industry. It has been incredible to see how our small passion project has gone from just 100 hackers to 300-plus from different places around the world.”

Projects focused on environmental solutions, mobility concerns, consumer protection challenges and more. Over a dozen sponsors — which included companies like fetch.ai, Amazon and Carhartt — had representatives at the event. The winning teams were awarded prizes totaling $7,500.

CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH: LOOK OUT FOR JOB SCAM MESSAGES

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. In each Reporter this month, Information Technology Services will share advice on how to keep your information safe.

U-M faculty, staff and students can add an extra layer of security to U-M's Gmail email messages by using <https://t.e2ma.net/click/f8hlzn/vk2png/3e3413> Virtru, which allows for sending end-to-end encrypted email. Virtru includes a number of security features and options to encrypt your email and help you control access to the email that you send when using the tool. You choose whether to turn encryption on for each email that you send. If on, you'll be able to see whether the recipient has opened the email, prevent a forwarded email from being read, set an expiry date beyond which the email cannot be read, revoke the ability to read an email after it has been sent, and more. For more information about Virtru, <https://t.e2ma.net/click/f8hlzn/vk2png/j73413> see this one-pager.
