From the story. "Maitreya Shah heard the bird’s distinctive chirp in a nearby tree at a botanical garden in the Maryland suburbs. But he’s blind and couldn’t see it. With his arm stretched upward, he held his iPhone up to try to capture the sound as an app identified the bird. “It’s a cedar waxwing,” the 27-year-old told his fellow blind birders as they walked on a paved path surrounded by grass and flowers at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland."

Dear friends,

On May 3rd and 4th of this year, birders who are blind or have low vision will head outside and listen from backyards and balconies, from parks and accessible trails. They will tune into the birds around them and share that experience with a growing community spurred into existence by a trio of blind birders eager to help redefine birding to include all ways of experiencing the joy of wild birds.

This is the <https://swn6onfbb.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0017VIBFR0qyijfGnEMU0nn7iNhFOAvyyACEsO5Vdow5O5zzf6yj4Nfwp4d8v3TicDh7_cXTlhaKjKy0hrkchhbXiTmYW-cr4RQgDqGg5KTzqGJ7LP8eSmH9wmS12k3aCNCimOhpyocZtBMle6QQUZVfj-iJiY8Ee4nRcHW7w8FSppPwiVq7IQKSQ==&c=nSGQ2RDUhseF5w54Wt_VIfQi5M4TgLNbqJmY-WztDST6EaF87aM-3Q==&ch=AUMx5l7A-_U4RcIoVIwpQv2TRrTdKBW41kzVBpNr_KgRMvDFQ8miiQ==> 2nd Annual Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon. It was created by and for blind and low-vision birders, and it reflects the many ways that folks who are blind or low-vision experience nature and birds.

Last year and throughout this community, participants have shared what this experience makes possible. Some of the ways that organizers and participants described the experience last year include:

“Birding is such a feast for the remaining senses…”

“I always tell people, try not to think that I get less joy from birding than you do, just because I can't see them…”

“The more one blind person felt like they could do something, the more that encouraged another…”

"I don't even have the words - I am in awe to think that I can take part in birding. This was very motivating to those of us who thought blindness was the end of life and hobbies like this."

This is what your support makes possible.

Certainly an event, but also a space where people can show up as they are and help shape what birding can be. All of us together, creating a space where community forms through sound and time spent together, realizing how much we have in common across our differences.

At Birdability, we build this work alongside the community. The Bird-a-Thon is one part of a greater effort that includes resources, gatherings, and ongoing support for birders who have often been left out of outdoor spaces.

We are a small nonprofit, and this work depends on people who believe in it and choose to support it.

As we head into this year’s Bird-a-Thon, I am asking you to help sustain and grow this work.

A gift today helps us

• support participants with tools and connections before and after the event

• hold community spaces where people can share knowledge and build relationships

• expand accessible birding opportunities so more people can find their place in it

If you have been following this work, or if these stories resonate with you, I hope you will consider making a gift today because every single dollar matters and every birder belongs.

Thank you for helping us make birding for every body.
