Image description: A graphic with a teal and blue patterned background and the Birdability logo in the upper left. Large white text reads “2nd Annual Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon” and below it “Registration and Resources Available Now!” Three circular photos appear on the right side. The top photo shows a small group of adults walking together on a paved park path using long white mobility canes, with sighted folks alongside them. The middle photo shows a person standing on a forest trail with a yellow guide dog at their side. The bottom photo shows two adults standing together outside a building entrance, one holding a white cane, both smiling toward the camera.

Registration Is Open for the 2026 Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon

We are thrilled to share that registration is now open for the 2026 Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon, happening May 3 and 4, 2026. This annual celebration of sound-based birding, community, and access is a reminder that birding belongs to all of us, and centers blind and low-vision birders.

Whether you bird alone or in a group, in a backyard, a favorite trail, a local park, or from a window, the Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon is about birding your way and being part of something bigger together.

New Resource Launch. A Toolkit for Hosting Inclusive Bird-a-Thon Events

Alongside the registration opening, we are excited to release a brand-new Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon Toolkit.

This resource is designed for two audiences who may want to work together.

One section supports blind-serving organizations interested in partnering with a local birding group to host an outing- or listening-focused event for their community.

The second section supports birding organizations such as Audubon chapters, bird clubs, nature centers, and community groups who want to reach out to blind and low vision communities and co-create an accessible Bird-a-Thon experience.

The toolkit takes you through partnership building, planning considerations, access needs, and practical steps to help events feel welcoming, thoughtful, and grounded in shared leadership, including a case study from a collaborative event held last year for the inaugural bird-a-thon. It is also a living document, so please share your ideas, additions, and stories about using it to inform our future work!

Join the Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon Community Conversations

We also invite you to join us for upcoming Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon Community Conversations - a space to connect, share ideas, and learn from one another as we head toward May.

Community Conversations will be held at 7 pm Eastern Time on:

February 3, 2026 - The Pleasures of a Bird Soundscape with John Kricher

Birds are commonplace and diverse in virtually all of the world’s habitats. They are audio-visually oriented as to how they perceive their world and audio perception is often more important than visual. John Kricher will explain how being attuned to bird sound provides knowledge, learning, and satisfaction.

March 10, 2026 - Living on the Wind: How and Why Birds Migrate with Scott Widensaul

Scott will discuss how migratory birds travel extraordinary distances each year, navigating through means that seem more like science fiction than natural history, undergoing almost incomprehensible physical changes as they move across tens of thousands of miles.

These conversations are open to all.

Save the Date. Blind Birder Bird a Thon Information Session

If you are interested in participating, hosting an event, or simply learning more, we will also be hosting a Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon Information Session on April 14 at 7 pm Eastern Time.

This session will talk through how the Bird-a-Thon works and how to get involved in ways that fit your capacity and access needs.

We cannot wait to listen together this spring. Registration is open, resources are ready, and this community continues to grow because of you.

With excitement,

The Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon Planning Team

Birdability, Jerry Berrier, Donna Posont, Martha Steele, and our collaborators at Toronto Ornithological Society

Two people are seated in power wheelchairs, one on the left wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt and another on the right wearing sunglasses and patterned pants. Between them stands a smiling person wearing glasses, a light green button-up shirt, gray pants, a backpack, and a nametag. Slightly behind the group stands another person wearing a blue shirt, a brimmed hat, and a cross body bag.

We are excited to share a new way for you to connect with birds and community near you. Our website now features an interactive map that lets you find local Birdability outings and events across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. These are gatherings led by Birdability Captains and often held in partnership with bird clubs and disability organizations, so more people can enjoy accessible birding together. Visit our Accessible Outings page to explore what’s happening near you and plan to join an outing nearby. The map is just getting started, so check back often for additional events being added! Our next webinar willl be March 11, 2026 at 3:00 P.M. Eastern when we will be joined by Emma Giles from SciStarter for a conversation about Citizen Science Month in April. This session will highlight how anyone, anywhere, can take part in scientific research. No prior experience is needed. By participating in fun events or simply sharing observations, people can help crowdsource and accelerate research across a wide range of fields, including birding and conservation! (P.S. the Birdability Map is included in that definition!) Join us in March - and find out more at <https://swn6onfbb.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Cdal1xrqQTDgch6F7ssfaHoOMWBWAarIBF_Y3pHLfe_M1g1l_UFyVp2xiohuX3Grp9l6Of28b-yKlCVGafra0PUf88cw6nShrGawVH5u0r9_wrtLAXMgddtrkO1TU_eXuHIFwF7N7LQOM5nOcr2mEqu1LYWk4ZyvfHRNWbh07hF3oa5AH1HIMw==&c=WZ1iPkrQOQjJq4UpW0HDWFf79xdPpOReBO-0RKofZpY-vDZi1LvkQA==&ch=IUlHCWl9Ii-HnBXSh3JbLTeVayjmEY5EZU2Iq294d2ufgjFhFiNzAA==> https://scistarter.org/citizensciencemonth

Emma Giles is the Director of Programs and Operations at SciStarter, where she produces and hosts Do NASA Science LIVE!, a virtual event series, and leads signature initiatives, including Citizen Science Month and the annual Acts of Science challenge each April. She holds a Master’s degree in Science & Technology Policy from Arizona State University and brings experience as a former 5th grade teacher in Phoenix, Arizona, as well as a climate science graduate fellow in Vienna, Austria.

Project FeederWatch is one of the longest-running participatory science programs in North America, inviting people across the United States and Canada to observe and count birds during the winter months. Participants contribute valuable data that helps scientists track population trends, document range shifts, and better understand how birds are responding to environmental change. Just as importantly, for many people, FeederWatching becomes a grounding and joyful winter ritual that supports mental health and connection.

In this webinar recording, Dr. Sanderfoot shares the history and impact of Project FeederWatch, how the data supports conservation research, and how winter birding can be accessible and meaningful for birders with a wide range of access needs.

Centered on the graphic is the book cover for Disabled Ecologies: Lessons from a Wounded Desert by Sunaura Taylor, showing tall green cacti reaching upward against a muted sky, with the book title in bold orange text. Below the book cover, large white text reads “March 18, 2026.” At the bottom, white text states: “Disabled Ecologies: Lessons from a Wounded Desert by Sunaura Taylor.”

On March 18, 2026 at 7:00 P.M. ET, we gather for the next meeting of the Birdability Book Club to discuss Disabled Ecologies: Lessons from a Wounded Desert by Sunaura Taylor. This powerful book invites us to think differently about disability, environment, care, and interdependence, and to notice how access, harm, and resilience show up across landscapes and bodies alike. Together, we will reflect on what it means to belong to place, how disabled perspectives reshape environmental justice, and how care can be both personal and collective.
