Fellow Federationists
I think it would be helpful to keep in mind that the blind have a very small
market. It costs a lot to produce products for the blind because we have
such small numbers.
I remember that the speech plus calculator sold for $400.00. My mother
loaned me the money to purchase it because I was a student and could not
afford it: I was thrilled to get it because I now had a calculator that I
could use.
Please go back down memory lane to the Braille N Speak which cost $1,500.
Wasn't it wonderful to have a notetaker which was so much faster than the
slate and stylus.
The first KNFB reader cost $3,000 which was a tremendous benefit to those
blind people who could afford it.
It is sometimes necessary to purchase products when they come out even
though upgrades come out later which cost less.
I hope that the i phone or other products will improve what we had before
and that they would cost less enabling more blind people to purchase them.
I think we were blessed that Dean Blazie and Ray Kurzweil were trailblazers
who produced wonderful products to benefit the blind even though these
products cost a great deal of money. Thank you for your consideration of my
thoughts.
Cordially,
James Moynihan
