[Nfbmo] Myth Busters

Gail, I might even be able to go Myth Busters one better...shortly after we
adopted Kevin, some lady at our bank told us that blind children had to be
taught how to smile! Supposedly she'd gotten that from Springfield's
Visually Impaired Preschool.

Later, Kevin went to VIP. We talked to the teacher, who was flabbergasted,
to say the least, that someone had a) made that remark, and b) had
attributed it to VIP. The teacher's philosophy was, "they're children first,
and blind fourth or fifth."

Oh, and Kevin never did have to be taught how to smile. <G>.

Gail, thanks for the note.

I will go try to find the episode.

I stopped watching the show many years ago.

Generalizations are really bad.
I hope we can educate folks about us, so myths like the one on the show are
not propagated to the sighted world as absolute truth.

This morning someone told me they had learned something about blind people.
They learned that blind people cannot walk a straight line. They learned it
from the reality show Myth Busters. This poor lady was all excited because
of course it had to be true, and besides it was funny!

I asked her if they had actual blind people on the show or if these were
sighted folks who had been blindfolded. Of course they were blindfolded
sighted folks pretending to be blind. So if they couldn't walk a straight
line, neither could the actual blind person.

So on the soapbox I went. I explained about properly trained blind people
being able to walk a straight line. Now, I didn't watch the show. So I
don''t know what actually happened. If this well educated person believed
this nonsense, think of the negativity this can bring us. We work so hard to
get rid of stereotypes and then this.
