Subject: DCHR: Call to Action

Good morning!

I am sending information out to you all on the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. While I know this is not specific to health care or part of our coalition's agenda, I know you all are strong advocates for disability rights. The Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities is a UN treaty that people with disabilities have been working to get ratified for a number of years. It is finally coming up for a vote in the Senate tomorrow (Tues.). Senator Blunt had shown support in the past, but voted no when the Senate voted to bring it up for discussion. I am in DC and spoke with his staff this morning. They said they are hearing from a lot of people from other states, but he needs to hear from Missourians.

Senator Blunt is getting a lot of opposition from home school groups and some religious groups as they have been given false information that the treaty could restrict the rights of parents and dictate education law. There are actually protections in the treaty so that U.S. law can not be effected by signing the treaty. Voting to ratify CRPD helps the U.S. make a global statement about disability rights. I've attached talking points, a flyer for a rally in St. Louis, and a link to more info on CRPD.

PLEASE CALL SENATOR BLUNT'S OFFICE TODAY AND TELL HIM TO VOTE YESS ON CRPD. THEN SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND NETWORKS.

I greatly appreciate your consideration and adavocacy efforts on this issue.
