I have to agree with Gary.
Elected officials have to know - and show - that they have public
support for their actions. Think of it this way: if, in spite of the dire
consequences and misinformation promulgated about the health care program for
Blind Pensioners no one bothered to publicly show up to support the
governor in vetoing any budget that eliminates the program, his position is very
much weakened and could well decide that if we don't care that much, why
should he stick his neck out? And further, lack of such evident support
could be rightly seen by the those opposed to this program that it isn't
reallly that important to anyone.
I've been noticing lately a disturbing trend among some
beneficiaries of long-standing programs that help to compensate for social inequality.
Some feel that the 'wars' have been fought and won, that because they
'carried signs' in the past means they are exempt from further defense of
their rights and to support programs that will make a huge difference to them.
This trend is happening in the NAACP, NOW as well as the NFB. I'm
actually not so much responding to your post now, Bryan, but rather to what
I've heard lately from some affiliated and non-affiliated blind people who
have benefitted from the NFB. Like it or not, the political and social
sentiments that gave rise to civil rights legislation is being challenged by
some very powerful forces. It's up to us to push back.
You're absolutely right that calls, letters and emails are absolutely
necessary - that showing up at a rally does not exempt anyone from
follow-up. The numbers add up and can sway a legislator who is on the fence to
consider their position more reasonably.

Hi Bryan. You are right about the next chapter of the fight, but I think
we
were able to get most people there for about $40 per person. Given what is
at stake, I think that is a bargain. If we don't do everything we can to
preserve what so many of our folks need, we will have to shoulder the blame
when we lose it.
We will know whether or not we have been successful when the general
assembly adjourns. What we know right now is that the Governor is an ally
and that we are stronger with him than without him. What we needed to show
yesterday is that we are an ally worth having, and we did that by putting
more than 100 people together in a rally. If we win, our rally will have
been a part of that. If we lose, at least we won't be second guessing
whether or not we could have done more.
There you have my two cents on the matter.
Gary

to what has been in the paper.
the real fight will be everyone continuing to call and email this week and

Rally
Hi all,
For all those who couldn't make it to the rally - and for those who
did and want to have an audio record, here's the recording - unedited -
that I made of the Gov. Nixon's short speech at the rally.
I don't have editing software (but if anyone has some good free
software I could use to do so, i'm interested) so the files starts
shortly after
an introduction for the Governor, then the speech and afterwards some
comments about the event and the presentation by NFB notables Debbie
Wunder,
Brent and Carie Ford, Ruby Polk and others whose voices I should know
but
don't.
The audio is 8 minutes and 41 seconds long.
Dan
