Hello, the Show Me State Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind will have it's first meeting on Tuesday, February 123 at 6:30 - 7:30. This is a brand new chapter, members should be made up from people who live in rural communities, maybe have a health problem that prohibits them from travel, live in an area where transportation is impossible, or possibly be of a religious faith that will not allow them to work on a weekend.

The purpose is to eventually find enough people in your local area to form a chapter that meets in a physical location. For those whom this would never be possible, then this will be your home chapter.

The chapter will meet monthly via conference line for about one hour or a little longer. This chapter will participate in functions of the state affiliate.

If you would like to find out more about this opportunity please call me at 573 268 6989 or email debbiewunder at centurytel.net or join us on the call at 6:30 on Tuesday, February 13.

The call in number is 888 354 0094 room 6802928

Dear Friend:

One of the major benefits of self-organization found in the National Federation of the Blind is found in the strength that comes from meeting and talking with other blind people, learning that the problems one has are shared by many, and coming to see that often there are solutions that can reduce or resolve them.

Until recently meetings had to take place in-person, so only blind people able to work out transportation could attend. A member-at-large chapter is a way to bring together people for whom the lack or expense transportation makes attending meetings impossible or impractical. Meetings are conducted using conference calls, and members use a toll-free number to participate in the call.

Like other chapters, the at-large chapter meets monthly, has an agenda, has a business meeting and some social time, makes plans, and works for the betterment of the blind. A typical meeting might include talking about current legislation in Jefferson City or Washington DC that will either help or hurt blind people, discussion of someone's recent trip and how she coped with blindness, or a demonstration of new technology for reading a book, playing a game, or performing some household chore. Mostly the agenda will come from the ideas of participants-what you want to hear, to share, or to figure out.

If you are interested in being a part of our call, please contact Debbie Wunder by calling (573) 268-6989. Initially we will propose a date and time for the first call. The group will then decide on what day and at what time regular meetings will be held. It will be important for meeting times to be predictable, so please give this some thought.

Very Truly Yours,

Debbie Wunder, Chairman
