Subject: [Nfbmo] In answer to Nancy Lyn: Fwd: Wolfner SHELF Program
Hi Nancy,
You kindly sent us info on how to get locally produced books from the
Washington State NLS affiliate Talking Books program on Monday and I
promised to get back to you and the list on Wolfner's access to Missouri
(and
other states) local narrated books. Richard Smith provided information to
me
in an email - here it is.
Dan

Download Wolfner Library Digital Books from the SHELF Project
Wolfner Library is excited to introduce readers to the SHELF Project which
offers locally produced Missouri, Massachusetts, Colorado, Kansas, Braille
Institute, and Idaho talking books for download. The SHELF Project (Shared
Electronic Files) is an online catalog of locally recorded titles combined
with the capacity to download these available titles to play on a Library
of Congress player or other compatible third-party purchased player such as
a Victor Stream, BookSense, PlexTalk Pocket and others.
This collection of digital books enhances the National Library Service
(NLS) collection. Regional recordings are comprised of materials that are
unique or even one-of-a-kind, providing a rich source of information for
readers. The goal of this project is simple and straightforward: to make it
easier for eligible readers to find books, specifically books that may not
be
found in any other way.
Books may be accessed through Wolfner Library's online catalog, WolfPAC,
at _http://wolfpac.sos.mo.gov/klasweb_ (http://wolfpac.sos.mo.gov/klasweb) .
To download an available title, a WolfPAC User ID and password must be
used. A user ID is usually the first five letters of the patron's last name
and the first letter of the patron's first name followed by two digits. This
code is printed on all mailing cards sent to patrons. (example:Harry Potter
POTTEH01) Passwords are often the patron's seven digit phone number (no
area code). Should there be any problems with login information, please
contact Wolfner Library for assistance.
One of the easiest ways to use the SHELF Project is to browse the
collection. Go to Patron Information and log in first before beginning a
search.
This will ensure that when a desired title is found to download, the
process
can takeplace immediately instead of being prompted to log in and risk
having to start all over again.
Once logged in, go to the Wolfner SHELF link. There are now 1,778 SHELF
titles in SHELF for download. More titles will be added on a regular basis.
When a title of interest is located, more information about that book is
available by clicking on the title link. To download the book, scroll to
the
bottom of the record and click on the Download locally recorded title link.
Note: Do not click on the Add to Book Basket link.
After the downloaded link is opened, there will be a prompt to Open or
Save the file. Select the Save option. The file name will appear with the
title,
author and book number followed by .zip. The fi le is a compressed or
zipped file that will need to be extracted into its own folder named with
the
title of the book for easy location, on a cartridge or flash drive to play
on a player.
Please try this new service and enjoy readings recorded by Wolfner Library
as well as other network libraries around the country.
