Below is a report on tonights senate debate on HB 350. Although this has not
been something we have worked on as an organization, I know there are some
of you who have followed the bill and or have benefited from this program.
This is the bill for which Corey testified against before the legislators
spring break. I pass the information along for those who may want to contact
legislators as individuals.

Subject: [Modisabilaw] SB350 - Elimination of Property Tax Credit for
Renters

 

The Senate this evening debated and perfected SB350 to eliminate the
renter's portion of the Senior Citizens Property Tax Credit.  The credit has
been available for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities since
1973.  Last year, 104,000 low-income renters applied for and received the
credit of up to $750 through the credit on a sliding scale based on the
person's income.  The average credit awarded was $534.

 

Senators who spoke out against the bill emphasized that many low-income
individuals relied on the credit for out-of-pocket expenses such as
prescriptions, medical supplies, utilities and other necessities.  

 

The bill will need one more vote for final passage in the Senate to move on
to the House.
