Even if it didn't ruin your phone, (which I'm sure it would), it would
certainly invalidate any warranty you might have on the phone.  If you
bought it through a service provider such as AT&T or Sprint it would also
violate their terms and conditions.

Don't do it.  It's a rumor started to see how many people will ruin their
phone.  Apparently a lot of people have done this.
