Friends,
My ex-wife, Cathy Flasar (born Cathy Schutz), passed away Wednesday
morning after a long illness. She is survived by our son Alex Flasar of
Edwardsville, her daughter Amy Cohen of Columbus, Ohio, 3 grandchildrenl - Eli,
Lela and Sophie Cohen of Columbus, Ohio - and two brothers, Paul Schutz and
Phil
Schutz of Edwardsville, IL. Two other children, Tanya and Bryan Boyland,
preceded her in death.
Cathy practiced nursing throughout her career from 1967 to the
present, earning BS, MS and PhD degrees along the way. In addition to her many
years running nursing floors in several St. Louis Hospitals, Cathy taught
nursing to generations of students in all the major nursing programs in St.
Louis, most of them passing their Boards on the first try. Cathy was a
strong advocate for maintaining patient centered care in the face of misguided
policies attempting to reduce nurse/patient ratios and insurance-dictated
limits on patient contact.
Although Cathy and I had our differences, separating in 1998, we
continued to share holidays with our kids and grandkids. We helped each
other through some difficult times. Her dedication to her craft, her students
and her patients served as a model I tried to live up to in my work at
Washington University School of Medicine. Cathy was a hero to her many
students and colleagues - and she was to me too. We will miss her.
Cathy requested that her remains be donated to a medical school for
the furtherance of science education. A memorial service will take place
at Trinity Lutheran Church, but the date has not yet been determined.
Cathy asked that any donations be given to any organization that provides for
the rescue and care of stray animals.
Sincerely,
Dan Flasar
