This is a fantastic post, and I'm glad you took the time to answer my
questions. I can easily adopt that new way of making a sandwich, and the
idea of raising the bar by a step or two each day is also something I can
do. Thank you.

First of all I will start off by confessing that I truly have an unfair
advantage over most folks in the fitness challenge as I am retired and have
lots of time to walk and walk some more. For the life of me I cannot figure
out how Robin House averages well over 20,000 steps working full time at one

job and part time at another!   I am humbled by her performance!
some of the things I do include walking around the block for about 1,500
steps, walking back and forth while listening to a book or sports, and
walking in place while watching TV.
It may sound silly but one thing that can build a lot of steps is to do
things  without being efficient. For example if I am making a sandwich I
will walk to the refrigeerator and get the cheese and take it to the table
then walk back and get the lunchmeat out and then get out the mustard and
reverse the process once the sandwich is made. Depending how far away your
table is from the  refrigerator it is amazing how many steps this can add. 
On days I am short on steps I will eat that sandwich while walking. One day
when I was home alone I brought in the mail one item at a time from the curb
- 10 items added well over 500 steps.
A year ago I was happy with 8,000 steps now I am crushed if I do not meet my
new goal. One thing that has helped is having a friendly competition with
someone else in the group, for me it has been Robin. So, I suggest picking
out someone close but ahead of you in the standings and  challenging
yourself to beat them and even cheer and taunt them. As you climb  the
ladder pick out someone new to have fun with.
Finally a strategy I used was to make myself go just one more step then I
did the day before even if it meant staying up a couple minutes later.
I do not know if this all sounds silly but just thought I would share as
more than anything I want to see everyone doing fantastic in the challenge!

Like those of you who have already posted, I had a wonderful time on Sunday
by helping the Delta Gamma Foundation in what I understand to be their
largest fundraiser of the year. On days when you do a walk like this, it is
easy to meet a step goal such as the one I have, which happens to be 10,000
steps a day. Now I see that my goal, no matter how hard I find to make it
some days, is far surpassed by many in our group. The question I would like
to explore is how you do it? I have a job that lets me work at home, so I
have a lot more freedom to take the time I need for exercise and other
things, but most of my job really requires that I sit at a computer, read
mail, and respond to it, and write , write, write. Sometimes I try to be
creative and read materials I am reviewing on a portable device, but there
is only so much I can do to keep on moving. How do those of you who work in
more structured environments managed to get the number of steps you get? Are
you walking in place as I sometimes do? Are you walking outside, as I
sometimes do? Do you pace around parts of your office space, as I sometimes
do?



I'd love suggestions for how to get my step count up without seeing a
commensurate reduction in my salary. I welcome and encourage your thoughts.
Please respond on list, even if you think my 10,000 step count is rather
wimpy.
