[NFBMO] work expenses

Remember a couple of things...
Regardless of the amount of income you haveyou are allowed a nine month
trial work period during which there is no income limit and on top of
that once you have exhausted the Trial Work Period there is a three
month work adjustment period. The nine month do not need to be used
concecutively but the Workd Adjustment three month are consecutive. If
you do not use up the nine months within five years the older month
begin to drop off.
The trial work period should give a recipient time to explore whether or
not they have Impairment Work Related Expenses and talk to SSA about
what will be allowed.
One final note, there is an overlooked item that can benefit a disabled
person who goes to work. If you are hired but have less job duties or
need additional supervision due to your blindness you could qualify as
having subsidized employment. For example if your employer states you
only due 80% of the work of a regular employee then only 80% of your
income is countable. Also, if you or the employer hire a reader that
person's wages are deducted from your income regardless of who pays
(provided that they are not hiring similar employees for non-disabled
people.).

Hi,

It's more complicated than I thought and it sounds like it's easier to
discontinue ssdi if the difference per month could be about equal.
These are the kind of details the employment call should be reviewing.
Thanks so much,
Bryan

Bryan,
There are two different work expenses. Under SSI they are called
Blindness related Expenses and under SSDI they are called Impairment
Work Related expenses. The website is SSA.Gov and type these titles into
the search bar.
Generally Blindness Related expenses (BRE)under SSI are much broader and
largely include the Impairment Work Related expenses (IWRE) under SSDI.
Transportation under IWRE is not an IWRE expense unless there is no
regular public transportation available such as city bus, walking, or
Metro Link, but might be allowed on BRE in some cases.
Equipment like AIRA may or not be allowable. As the two questions you
would be asked: "How is it need for employment considering other access
technology that are already available?" and "If it is needed for
employment why isn't the state rehab agency or employer paying for it?"
While BRE is very easy to bet allowances for things like work clothes,
raised line markers the only absolute things under under IWRE are the
out of pocket cost eye medications and care and feeding of a dog guide.

Hi,

Would someone know a website to read more about what are valid work
related expenses such as transportation or aira that can decrease your
monthly income?

Thanks,

Bryan
