Hello all,
My state representative Donna Baringer sent a letter to constituents stating
that she is a member of the Missouri State Capitol Commission and how she is
trying to make the capitol more ADA compliant. However, she only mentions
accessibility for people in wheelchairs and people with crutches. I want to
respond to her by saying that she needs to include the accessibility needs
of people who are blind and visually impaired. I have not been to the
capitol so don't know what the problems are there. I have heard complaints
from people with low vision that the marble floors and stairs are all one
color and that it is hard to distinguish stairs. I have heard that there
are monitors that visually show where various meetings are and when meeting
rooms are changed, but these are not accessible. There is some kind of
masterplan for capitol restoration in process which is supposed to consider
citizen access and information and technology needs. If anyone knows of any
other accessibility problems, please respond. Thanks.
Annette Nowakowski.
