Below is a sample letter for HB 520. Your letter need not be near as detailed the important thing is to write. One sentence simply asking that the bill be brought to the floor would be enough.

Gene Coulter

Dear Senator

I am writing to you today to urge your support and action in bringing House Bill 520 (HB 520) to the Senate floor for a vote. This legislation addresses a crucial improvement to the Blind Pension program by removing the certified mail requirement for its participants. Passing this bill would bring significant benefits on multiple fronts.

First and foremost, this change would greatly alleviate unnecessary burdens on blind recipients. Currently, participants face additional steps and expenses to travel to the post office to retrieve certified mail in order to obtain and retain their benefits. For many, this requirement is both impractical and counterproductive. Simplifying the process will ensure that participants can access their benefits without undue hardship.

Moreover, HB 520 will provide financial and operational efficiencies for the state. The elimination of the certified mail requirement will reduce administrative workloads for Family Support Division (FSD) staff and save the state over a million dollars annually. These are valuable resources that could be reallocated to further strengthen community programs and public services.

It is worth noting that similar legislation has been introduced repeatedly over the past six years, underscoring the broad recognition of this issue’s importance. Now is the time to act decisively and enact this measure, ensuring that individuals reliant on the Blind Pension program are treated with dignity and efficiency.

I respectfully ask that you take whatever steps necessary to advance HB 520 to the Senate floor for a vote. Your leadership on this matter would make a meaningful difference for blind individuals across the state and exemplify a commitment to fiscal responsibility and fairness.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require further information or if I can assist in any way.

Sincerely,

Eugene Coulter
