To honor this anniversary, the Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus in Congress held a special event on Capitol Hill where the current caucus chair, Rep. Jim Langevin of Rhode Island, announced his successors.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>In case you may be wondering what a congressional caucus is, and how it differs from a congressional committee, let’s take a brief detour. A caucus is a group of members of Congress who meet with the goal of pursuing common legislative objectives. Typically, they will have bipartisan membership, but not always. Additionally, while a caucus may seem like just another committee, caucuses have no official jurisdictional authority. Effectively, a caucus is a brainstorming session for members of Congress who are passionate about a specific issue. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus was created during the 107th Congress and, as its name suggests, focuses on resolving disability issues in a bipartisan manner. Representative Langevin was a key figure in the creation of the caucus during the 107th Congress, and given his retirement at the end of the current Congress, he chose to announce the co-chairs for the caucus going forward. The next co-chairs of the Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus will be Representative Debbie Dingell of Michigan and Representative Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.
