Tons of people who work or play in the securities and</span><br><span>insurance industry want to draw in would-be retirees like you and me,</span><br><span>even offering us a free dinner or cocktail and giving us some general</span><br><span>education about how Social Security Old Age benefits work, in exchange</span><br><span>for our time as we also feel compelled to listen to their sales pitch</span><br><span>for an insurance policy, annuity, or mutual fund. In the main, I</span><br><span>believe these industry-sponsored educational opportunities are of</span><br><span>benefit to many; but almost no one out there in the financial services</span><br><span>industry understands how blindness intersects with the administration</span><br><span>of federal and state social insurance and welfare programs. Yet we</span><br><span>who are blind have some special considerations with Social Security</span><br><span>that it serves us well to know about. In large part, this is because</span><br><span>of the persistent pressure which Dr. Kenneth Jernigan, James Omvig,</span><br><span>and other leaders in the National Federation of the Blind brought to</span><br><span>bear on our country's politicians as Social Security laws and</span><br><span>regulations were being deliberated.</span><br><span></span><br><span>This is why I want to let everyone know that Daniel Frye of the</span><br><span>National Federation of the Blind of New Jersey will be delivering a</span><br><span>talk about Social Security from a blindness perspective on Thursday,</span><br><span>November 9 at 7:00 PM Eastern/6:00 PM Central. There are numerous</span><br><span>reasons why Mr. Frye is qualified to give this presentation: He has</span><br><span>served as executive director of the New Jersey Commission for the</span><br><span>Blind and Visually Impaired; as administrator of the Randolph-Sheppard</span><br><span>program on a federal level, a function of his job as management and</span><br><span>program specialist within the U.S. Department of Education; and as</span><br><span>Manager of Affiliate Action-Advocacy and Training with the NFB.</span><br><span>Daniel Frye is also a graduate of the University of Washington School</span><br><span>of Law.</span><br><span></span><br><span>Even though none of us likely will be in the Garden State on November</span><br><span>9, the NFB of NJ has graciously agreed to share Daniel Frye's talk</span><br><span>about blindness and Social Security with the world. Tune in Thursday</span><br><span>evening at 7:00 PM Eastern, and come back during other parts of the</span><br><span>weekend to hear General Sessions as they are presented live. The</span><br><span>banquet address will be delivered by NFB national rep Anil Lewis from</span><br><span>the Crown Plaza in Edison, New Jersey.
