<h1><b>NFB IEP Advocacy Academy Applications are Open</b></h1><br>

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is calling all parents of
blind or low-vision children and other blind adults who are willing to
gain and enhance their knowledge of Individual Education Programs (IEPs)
and to assist families with the future education of blind or low-vision
students. <br>
<br>
Parents can easily feel overwhelmed by the IEP process required to
establish special education services for their children. There are simply
not enough knowledgeable IEP advocates. To address the extreme shortage
of knowledgeable advocates for blind and low-vision students across the
nation, the National Federation of the Blind, with support from the
National Organization of Parents of Blind Children (NOPBC), the Lavelle
Fund for the Blind, and the Professional Development Research and
Institute on Blindness (PDRIB), is offering an intensive IEP training
opportunity. <br>
<br>
At our IEP Advocacy Academy participants will:<br>
Learn to serve as volunteer advocates in preparation for and/or
attendance at IEP meetings for blind or low-vision students.<br>
Gain an understanding of education law.<br>
Learn how to develop a thorough and robust IEP.<br>
Acquire advocacy strategies to empower parents to advocate for students
and families.<br>
Assist in and create the strongest possible IEPs for blind students.<br>
Learn how to train other advocates in their perspective state.<br>
<br>
The IEP Advocacy Academy will take place in person in Baltimore, Maryland
at the National Federation of the Blind, May 30-June 2, 2024. Travel,
meals, and overnight accommodations will be provided for selected
applicants.<br>
