Research Participation Request: The Intersection of
(In)accessibility and Security: A Case Study of Sign-Up
Forms

The below research participant solicitation is being provided for
informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no
involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to
our research mission.

Research Title: The Intersection of (In)accessibility and
Security: A Case Study of Sign-Up Forms

Being conducted by: The George Washington University

Purpose of the Study
Based on preliminary findings, our
team has found that authentication forms (signup and login forms on
websites) are widely inaccessible to people with disabilities, especially
those who rely on screen readers for accessing information. Not only can
these errors be cumbersome, but they also have security and privacy
implications for people relying on assistive technology to access these
forms.

We want to get a holistic picture of how actual users interact with these
forms, as well as their personal experiences and concerns with website
authentication. The end goal of this research is to show that
accessibility is a critical dimension of security and privacy
design.

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

Participants will take part in an interview over ZOOM, where we
will ask them about their experiences with inaccessible authentication on
the web. This will last no longer than 30 minutes.

In addition, participants may be asked to participate in a computer task
on a website self-hosted by the researchers. The task will involve
participants interacting with a sign-up authentication webform that
mimics the webform on a popular website, such as Facebook. Webforms will
have accessibility issues (which the participant is informed about). The
computer task is designed to prompt participants to think about their own
experiences with authentication webforms, especially accessibility
challenges they face. This exercise will be no longer than 15
minutes.

Proposed Participant Compensation
Yes, Each participant
will be paid with a $25.00 Amazon gift card.
