In fact I have been since I was 11 years old. This weekend is a big weekend in the world of Ham Radio thousands of Ham operators from all over the United States. Canada and the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico will be setting up stations in emergency facilities as well as area parks. Others will operate from home. This event is called field day the idea behind field day is to help you determine how prepared you are to operate your station in an emergency. It is also a good way for individuals who might be interested in getting their Ham operators license which is by the way very easy to do become become familiar with Ham Radio what it is and how it works. Below you will find a piece of information, or several pieces of information, which will explain what field day is all about. If you know a Ham operator in your area, ask them if they are going to be at a field day site and if you could perhaps go with them or find out where the site is so you can go with someone else. <p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 16px; font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue';">We are planning to operate CW, SSB, Digital modes (FT8, PSK31, JS8Call, Winlink email, etc.), and FM voice. </span></p>
<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in;"> </p>
<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 16px; font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue';">There will be four 3D-printed "flags" that will be located at the HF stations currently "permitted" to transmit. If you are operating at stations 1-7, please be sure there is one of these flags next to your station prior to transmitting. </span></p>
<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 16px; font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue';"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Here are the bands we are planning to use:</span> 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m, 10m, 6m, 2m, 70cm, 23cm (1296MHz), and 3cm (10GHz)</span></p>

<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 16px; font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue';">Steve K0UY is planning to bring his IC-9700 satellite station, complete with computer-controlled rotor assembly and 2m/70cm cross yagi antennas. With some help and a little luck, we will make a Field Day satellite contact (worth 100 bonus points). If anyone else is interested in working satellites and would like to participate in that endeavor, please contact Steve to coordinate efforts on Field Day. He will be attempting contacts on FM satellites only, due to the 5-watt restriction for our category. </span></p>

<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-size: 16px; font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue';">Regarding CW operation, there are many SLQS members/visitors who have been learning CW but not yet confident in their operating skills. If this is you, and you would like to try operating CW at Field Day, please ask another CW operator to "buddy up" with you. Headphone splitters and spare headphones will make it easy to have an experienced op help you as much as you prefer, whether it's with solid copy, logging, etc. </span></p>

<div><span style="font-size: 16px; font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue';">There will likely be a minimum of four SLQS members present at any given time to keep equipment secure, including the overnight hours. In the event of rain/storms/wind that could potentially damage the equipment, we will temporarily put it in whatever waterproof containers are provided by the owners. If you are providing any radio equipment, please bring a (labeled) weatherproof container. Also, please label all of your equipment, cables, and container(s) with your callsign and/or name. </span></div>

Due to positive feedback on this method of "band sharing," let's do that again! </span></p>
<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"><span style="font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue'; font-size: 16px;">This will help prevent operating fatigue while providing plenty of opportunities for everyone to have some air time. Rather than creating a schedule ahead of time, there will be a clipboard for signups at each (band) table. </span></p>
<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"><span style="font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue'; font-size: 16px;">When you arrive at Field Day, please sign up for one 30-minute operating slot at a time. Once you finish operating for 30 minutes, check the signup sheet to see if someone else is waiting to operate. If there is no one signed up, please ask those nearby if they'd like to operate. If no one else wants to operate, then sign up for another 30-minute slot and keep going. If you don't wish to operate for a full 30 minutes, that's OK - just let others know when you are finished operating on that band (especially 40m and 20m). </span></p>

<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"><span style="font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue'; font-size: 16px;">Several SLQS members have generously committed their Evolve III laptops for use at FD this year, so that we log contacts electronically with the N3FJP Field Day logging application. These small laptops have decent battery life and also run on 12 VDC/2A.</span></p>
<p class="defangedmsonormal" style="margin: 0in; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"><span style="font-family: system-ui, 'helvetica neue'; font-size: 16px;">Since we are operating in the battery category, the logging computers (which we can plug into AC power at the pavilion) must not be connected to the radios for CAT control <em>unless powered by battery or other non-commercial means</em>. Since our log entries don\u2019t require the frequency (just the band) of the contact, and since we typically use memory keyers (external or in-radio) this is not a big deal.</span></p>

There will be some headphone splitters on site to make this easier when two ops are working together at a station. Since we have used this logging application for the last few years, many are quite familiar with it already. There will also be paper and pencil logging available at each station for use <em>only in the event that computer logging stops functioning.</em></span></p>
