     Below are the minutes of the 2022 NFB of MT convention. Please review

MINUTES NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF MONTANA CONVENTION


October 1, 2022

 

*	The convention was held virtually.
*	The meeting was called to order by President Jim Marks at: 9:00.
*	There were 17 participants.

 


Board attendees:


 

*	President Jim Marks
*	1st Vice-President Joy Breslauer
*	2nd Vice-President Sheila Leigland (Excused absent)
*	Secretary Robert Jaquiss
*	Treasurer Ted Robins
*	Board member: Bruce Breslauer
*	Board member: Linda Hurlock
*	Board member: Jim Aldrich
*	Board member: Denise Moses

 

*	The pledge of Allegiance was given by Travis Moses.
*	The NFB pledge was led by Robert Jaquiss.
*	The invocation was given by Bruce Breslauer.
*	The board was introduced.
*	Our national representative, Denise Avant introduced herself.
*	All the attendees introduced themselves.
*	Denise Avant gave the national report. Included in the report were
several announcements.
*	The Washington Seminar Great Gathering In will be on Monday on Jan.
30, 2023.

 


Resolutions:


 

*	2002-01 Calling on the Montana Legislature to continue the funding
of NFB-newslineR. The resolution passed unanimously.
*	2022-02 Calling on the Montana Legislature to continue the funding
of Older Individuals Blind program (OIB) passed unanimously.
*	2022-3 Calling on the Montana legislature to improve Voting
accessibility passed.

 


Minutes and Treasurer's report:


 

*	A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes as emailed.
The motion passed unanimously.
*	Ted Robins gave the Treasurer's report. A motion was made and
seconded to approve the Treasurer's report. The motion passed unanimously.
Ted was thanked for his long years of service.

 


Elections:


 

*	The Nominating committee gave its report. All the nominees were
elected by acclamation. The following were elected:

 

*	President, Jim Marks.
*	1st Vice-President, Joy Breslauer.
*	2nd Vice-President, Sheila Leigland.
*	Secretary, Robert Jaquiss.
*	Treasurer Reginald (Regie) Herbert.
*	Board member: Jim Aldrich.
*	Board member: Denise Moses.

 

*	The board will select the delegates for the Washington Seminar.
*	Jim Marks will serve as the delegate for the 2023 National
convention.
*	The board will select the alternate delegate for the 2023 national
convention.

 


CHAPTER REPORTS:


*	Bruce Breslauer gave the report for the At Large chapter.
*	Joy Breslauer gave the report for the Great Falls chapter.
*	Samantha Chase gave the report for the Missoula chapter.

 


Committees:


*	Joy Breslauer chairs the legislation committee and reported on
various issues.
*	Sheila Leigland is stepping down from Membership.
*	Robert Jaquiss reported on fundraising. There is an opportunity to
work with the Missoula Lions during their Christmas tree sale and possibly
sell Sees chocolate.
*	The meeting was recessed for lunch.

 

*	The meeting was reconvened at 1:00.

 

*	George Kerscher moderated a panel on Social Security with Jim Gashel
as the speaker. Jim provided lots of useful information.

 

*	Marilyn Bennet reported on the Montana Talking Book and Braille
Library (MTBL). 
*	Paul Furthmyre, Superintendent of MSSDB gave an update.
*	Robert Jaquiss and Samantha Chase reported on NFB-NEWSLINER. 
*	There was a panel discussion on the pros and cons of guide dogs
versus white canes.
*	George and others talked about the importance of fitness and offered
information on apps and equipment.
*	The keynote speaker was Denise Avant.
*	Robert moved that up to $1000 be spent on chocolate for a
fundraiser. The Motion passed unanimously.
*	The board will look into brochures and business cards.
*	Next year's convention will be determined by the board.
*	The meeting was adjourned at 4:58.
