[Nfbmt] orientation & snow shoveling of sidewalks

I love shoveling the walks. In fact, at my home in Missoula I always
felt a little cheated when one of the retired neighbors cleaned my
front walk with his snow blower. Actually, each year after his
retirement his snow machine got bigger and bigger until he had a
little tractor and would do his entire side of the street, my side of
the street, and sometimes around the other block as well. He never
asked if I wanted him to, probably just assumed he was doing me a
favor. But I was always disappointed when he got to it at 6:30 in the
morning and I was still getting out of the shower.

So, my strategy for shoveling the walks is to get out there early.
Instead of doing long passes from one end of the sidewalk to the
other, I do short swipes from the curb to the grass, where I dump the
shovels-full of snow. That way, it's easier to ensure that I get all
the snow and don't leave long strips in the middle of the sidewalk.

Now is snowed a bit last night and continues to snow in the Denver
area. I confess, though, that I didn't get out to shovel early today
- at all so far since I'm at work. And this year there is a new
wrinkle that I didn't have in Missoula. It's called a driveway. I'll
get back to you about that later.

It was 7 degrees this morning, and may get as high as ten this
afternoon. Stay warm!
