I remember attending a number of several of the division meetings at
national conventions, in the 1990s, where Dr. Nemeth was speaking. And it
was a real delight to hear him speak. Brilliant, and kind man. Many others
would ask him questions, from the very simple to the most complex. Sometimes
it was mathematics. Sometimes it was philosophy. And sometimes it was just
history of the movement, or whatever. He is another in a series of that
generation we should never forget about. And I am confident the NFB will not
let his contribution go unrecognized. But I felt fortunate to get a chance
to hear him, and his generous spirit. Very nice to have such role models,
and such shining examples of accomplished members.

And of course there is always the Nemeth Code. Which of course I still do
not know. But I am glad that we have it.

I just have the cowboy code. Or the freeform radio code. Or something goofy
like that, to sit and ponder.
Still. pondering. That is something also useful at times, I guess.

He was a delightful person. I had the opportunity to learn from him about
the Braille N Speak several years ago. He had great stories and information
to share any time.

Hi all!

This man truly accomplished much for all blind persons! I've seen this on
other lists but think it should be placed here as well.

National Federation of the Blind Mourns Passing of Dr. Abraham Nemeth Honors
His Pioneering Work to Enhance Braille Baltimore, Maryland (October 2,
2013):

The National Federation of the Blind today mourns the death of Dr.
Abraham Nemeth, the scientist who invented the Nemeth Braille Code for
Mathematics and Scientific Notation and was a lifelong champion of Braille.

Dr. Marc Maurer, president of the National Federation of the Blind,
said: Dr. Nemeth had a great mind and a wonderful sense of humor. His
invention of the Braille code that bears his name has enabled many blind
people to learn, work, and excel in scientific, technology, engineering, and
mathematics, and his tireless Braille advocacy work undoubtedly changed
countless lives. He will be sorely missed and his contributions will be
valued by generations to come.
