Jim, that sounds like it would be much easier.  Does the same thing work
with entering punctuationand spaces?

Hi again Rebecca and list,

Start a text message, a note or Email where you are about to edit text. 
While in this edit field where you are typing, place two fingers on your
screen as if you are going to turn up a radio volume or turn a dial.  There
is no dial of course but you are about to activate the roter control.  Turn
your fingers till you hear typing mode.  Once there, swipe up with your
fingers and you should hear touch typing.  
Swipe down and you should hear standard typing. I believe you are using
standard typing at this time.  When going to touch typing, leave your finger
on the screen and you should hear each letter your finger touches.  When you
find the letter you want, lift your finger and it is entered in your text.
You might try this and see if it is more to your liking.
