Joy,
a "nomination" does not require a second. The only time a "second"
is required is when a motion has been made. Sudch as when the committee
puts forth the name of X and no further nominations are made from the floor
and someone moves that nominations cease and that "X" be elected by
aclaimation.
Sincerely,
Ted

Subject: [NFBMT] elections

Hi, fellow Montana Federationists.

The board members up for election this year are Stacie Huff and Linda
Hurlock.

I would like to appoint the three chapter Presidents as the nominating
committee for the fifth annual Treasure State convention elections to the
State Affiliate board. So at the convention, you three nominating committee
members will have a meeting time set aside in the agenda. Before the
nominating committee meeting at the convention Friday evening, the two board
members who are currently up for election should let one of the nominating
committee members know whether you wish to run again for election this year
for another two-year term. The three-member committee, sheila Leigland, Rik
James, and Jeff Haworth, will have a short closed-door meeting at the
convention, where they will pick a committee chair from among their number,
and agree upon a slate of names to put forth to the assembled convention as
the nominating committee. If board member x wants to run again, they will
recommend board member x. If board member y does not want to run again,
they will have no recommendation. Then the President will take nominations
from the floor for each position. If a chapter member or an at large member
who has paid their dues wants to nominate someone to the board, they may do
so then, provided they have checked with the person they plan to nominate
beforehand to see if they will accept the position if elected. The
nomination will be seconded, the nominee will give a short speech about why
he or she should be elected, and then we will take a vote. This procedure
will be repeated for each of the two open board positions, until the person
with the highest number of votes is elected.

The only thing I ask is that the nominating committee members remember that
what goes on at their meeting behind closed doors is kept strictly
confidential, and may not be discussed with anyone at any time for any
reason before the vote on the floor is taken before the assembled
convention.

Live the life you want

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.
