call-in meeting starting 2pm. Members of the general public who wish to join
the virtual meeting should contact Marlys Stark by Monday, June 5th by 5pm at

Purpose of the Meeting:

The Montana State Library Commission will take public comments regarding a
probable plan to reorganize the state library, including cutting certain
positions, which will comply with the Montana State Legislature's approved
House Bill 2 cuts. If approved by the Commission at their June 14th meeting,
proposed staff cuts will be initiated immediately. The effective date of
this law is July 1st.

Positions in the library that will be affected by this plan include:

The Talking Book Library Supervisor position

One Readers' Advisor position out of three existing positions

Two other positions will be cut in the Digital Library program. Additional
Talking Book Library changes include the two remaining Readers' Advisor
positions will be reporting to the Digital Library Public User Services
department lead and will take on additional duties within that department to
serve all public inquiries. The Collections Management position will be
reporting to the Digital Library Manager, as well as be an interim contact
for the National Library Service. The Recording/Volunteer Program Director
will report to the Central Services manager and take on additional
responsibilities for expanding both the recording and volunteer programs. It
will be necessary to expand the current services that the MTBL staff provides
in order to cover positions that would be cut in other departments.

It's my understanding that the current physical location of each MTBL staff
will remain the same and public access to the State Library Public User
Services will be routed to the current Talking Book Library Patron Center.
The collection will remain downstairs. Other details have yet to be worked
out.

If proposed cuts to the state library in Montana State Senate Bill 261 go in
effect on August 15th, an additional 8 positions in programs other than
talking books in the state library will be eliminated. The Montana State
Library is a small agency- only less than 45 full time staff.

If you have questions, feel free to contact Jennie Stapp, State Librarian, at
406-444-3116 or jstapp2 at mt.gov
