Since some of us can't make it in the morning, would Tuesday afternoon
November 14 work for any of you for the Bell Academy conference call? Or
possibly we could wait till early in the week of November 20, which is also
Thanksgiving week. Please let me know. Thanks. Joy

Hello, fellow Montana Federationists.

We have the chance to make some real history here, by launching the first
ever NFB of Montana Bell Academy next summer. Bell stands for Braille
Enrichment in Literacy and Learning.

Today I have spoken with Carla McQuillan, the President of the NFB of Oregon,
who has generously offered to help us get this off the ground.

I would like to schedule a conference call with her for those of us who are
interested in helping this monumental and exciting project become reality.
The tentative date is Thursday, November 16, at 9:00 A.M. If you are
interested in attending and that doesn't work for you, please let me know off
list and I will see what I can do.

There may not be an introductory training seminar for first time Bell Academy
states this year, so the idea is being floated that someone from another
successful Bell Academy could come to the states that are just starting out
and put on a mini-training-seminar for each state. I will keep you posted to
let you know if this idea takes flight.

The first thing we will need to do is to pick a venue. We do not yet have a
chapter in Missoula, something I would like to remedy, by the way, but
Missoula is one of the options for a city to host a Bell Academy. The other
options could be Billings or Bozeman or Great Falls. I was talking to Carla
about holding the Academy in a Montessori school, because Montessori schools
are usually open to ideas like this, and the curriculum is similar. There is
even a Montessori school in Kalispell, and Carla knows the director. So who
knows what we may ultimately end up with. The sky's the limit.

So one of our first tasks is to find a venue and pick a city to hold the
first Bell Academy in. The city where there is the most interest and where
we have or can get the most boots on the ground would be the most logical
place to have it. I already know of some people who have expressed to me
that they want to be on the Bell Committee.

Dar Aldrich, Billings

Jeff Haworth, Billings

Linda Hurlock, Helena

Bruce Breslauer, Great Falls

Joy Breslauer, Great Falls

David House, Missoula

Robert Jaquiss, Missoula

If I am missing anyone, please let me know off list.

If you would like to be on this Bell Academy conference call, let me know and
I will make sure you get the conference call information. It might be a good
idea to start a Bell Academy email list so we can keep each other informed of
developments as they occur.

We will need to find a certified teacher and find volunteers to help with
other aspects of running a Bell Academy, but others have done this before and
they assure me that it is all doable here in Montana. So if we come together
knowing that we can find a way to do it, no matter what obstacles we may
face, we can get it done. I am very excited about this new venture. I hope
you are, too.
