Aullwood Winter Speaker Series: Sunday, January 28 from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.is Aullwood’s third program in our Winter Speaker Series “Women in Science” 2018 - “Grandma Gatewood’s Walk” - presented by Sam Romeo, Aullwood Environmental Educator.
This is a story of Emma “Grandma” Gatewood, which speaks to the courageous spirit of not only the people of Appalachia but also nature enthusiasts everywhere. Emma Caldwell, born in 1887 at Raccoon Creek in Gallia County, Ohio, was 1 of 15 children. After raising 11 children of her own, Emma decided she needed another challenge in her life. When she read about the Appalachian Trail in National Geographic she discovered that no women had ever hiked the trail from one end to the other. It sounded like a challenge to her and she decided to be that woman. Never mind that she was 66 years old, had no real equipment, and had no real experience in backcountry hiking.
Grandma Gatewood set off on the barely marked trail from Mount Katahdin, Maine. She didn’t make it the first time and she underestimated just how difficult and long the Appalachian Trail was. However, she set off again the following year in 1955 with an “aluminum blanket,” old army blanket, Keds sneakers, extra dress, hose, house slippers, and a canteen. This time she managed to become the first women to hike the entire 2,168 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Emma became known to the public as Grandma Gatewood and a celebrity across America. Being the first woman to solo hike the AT end to end, at the age of 67, was no small feat. Her story raised the veil on several cultural barriers of the day, including age and sex discrimination. Local reporters followed her story, Sports Illustrated featured her, even the Keds sneaker company latched onto the marketing opportunity and supplied her with shoes. After completing the hike she was featured on "The Today Show", "Groucho Marx", "You Bet Your Life" and "The Tonight Show". (Center)

Jeremiah: Fire In The Heart: This first Connections Concert of the new calendar year takes us back to 1942 and Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1, Jeremiah. At its premiere, the composer himself conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This programmatic symphony follows the biblical story found in the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations. The piece has three movements: "Prophecy;" "Profanation;" and "Lamentation." Not to be taken literally, the movements instead cultivate the emotions within the story. In the first movement, "Prophecy," one can almost hear the prophet’s pleas. "Profanation," the second movement, is a scherzo, portraying the corruption and the ensuing destruction of Jerusalem. The third and final movement, "Lamentation," suggests the mournful cry of Jeremiah. The unique Classical Connections format features musical examples and explanation by DPO Artistic Director Neal Gittleman, followed by a performance of the entire composition. Directly following is a casual Q&A and an ice cream social with a free scoop of Graeter's.

Sophisticated Ladies With Steven Reineke: The new year continues to ring in with a tribute to some of the groundbreaking, sophisticated women of song. The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes guest conductor Steve Reineke back to the Miami Valley and the Schuster stage. Reineke’s boundless enthusiasm and exceptional artistry have made him one of the nation’s most sought-after pops conductors, composers and arrangers. He is the Music Director and Conductor of The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, Principal Pops Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Principal Pops Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. A native of Ohio, Reineke is a graduate of Miami University of Ohio, where he earned bachelor of music degrees with honors in both trumpet performance and music composition. Maestro Reineke is joined by guest singers Capathia Jenkins, N’Kenge, and Montego Glover to perform classic songs from the tradition of the Harlem Renaissance singers...women such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, and Billie Holiday. These women gave voice to jazz classics and new voice to many standards. It’s an evening filled with soul in the voices of those Sophisticated Ladies.

Bernstein Songfest: The intimate sound of the voice accompanied by piano or by a small grouping of orchestral instruments is a central thread in the development of classical and popular music. When you couple the full range of the human voice with the beautiful sound of a few select instruments in perfect harmony, you have a magic that is unique in its own right. Vocalists from Dayton Opera’s Artists-in-Residence program take center stage in the Dayton Art Institute Renaissance Auditorium for this musical excursion through the songbook of American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein.

The Music Of Led Zeppelin: In previous years, Windborne and the DPO have brought classic rock to symphonic heights, performing the music of The Who, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, The Doors, and, just last season, Whitney Houston. In February, the magic continues with The Music of Led Zeppelin. The Windborne musicians join with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra for a night where we can all "get the Led out!" The lush, intricate music of Led Zeppelin is ideal for rock and orchestral arrangement. The evening’s performance features all the rock group’s signature songs: “Kashimir,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “All My Love,” “Immigrant Song,” “Black Dog,” “Good Times, Bad Times,” and, of course, “Stairway to Heaven.” “And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last. When all are one and one is all.”

Foghat: Foghat's live performances show why the band is still around today and why they will be able to keep on rockin' as long as they want. This band truly is timeless and their live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and musicianship that one would expect and hope for from a seasoned band with such a long musical history. Formed in 1971 when Lonesome Dave Peverett and Roger Earl left the British blues-rock band, Savoy Brown, Foghat has earned eight gold records, one platinum record and one double-platinum record. And, they continue to release new music every few years. They have never stopped touring and recording, although there have been several ups and downs and changes over the years. They sadly lost Lonesome Dave Peverett in 2000 and Rod Price in 2005, but Roger Earl kept banging and kicking to keep Foghat's musical legacy going. According to a recent review "The '70s called…but there is no way in hell we are giving Foghat back to them. The iconic band from the past is rocking just as hard as they did decades ago, if not more! Foghat's thunderous blend of blues, boogie and butt-kickin' rock 'n' roll are shaking walls and fans everywhere. There is so much talent in this band it is ridiculous. Lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Charlie Huhn played with Ted Nugent, Gary Moore and Humble Pie, and lead/slide guitarist Bryan Bassett played with Wild Cherry and Molly Hatchet. Bass player Craig MacGregor has been with the band since the '70s and on drums was the man we have to thank for keeping Foghat going…founding member Roger Earl, who dazzled everyone with his wicked drum solo."

The Sound Of Music features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp. The Sound Of Music enjoyed extraordinary success as the first live television production of a musical in over 50 years when "The Sound of Music Live!" aired on NBC in December 2013 and was seen by over 44 million people. 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.
