2013 Walk for Independence

Breaking Barriers for the Blind

Dear Nebraskans,

It's time once again to find those walking shoes, which I'm sure are
buried under snow boots, and prepare for our 2013 Walk for Independence.

Winter doesn't seem to want to leave this year, but have no fear, our
Walk will be in May this year. So no excuse fellow Nebraskans. This year
we will enjoy walking in balmy spring weather.

The information for the Lincoln walk is as follows. *Note, our affiliate
board meeting will follow the walk-a-thon this year:

. Date: Saturday, May 11, 2013

. Time: Registration at 9:00 a.m., Walk at 10:00 a.m., lunch at
12:00 p.m., affiliate board meeting at 1:30 p.m.

. Location: St. Mark's, 1301 R St.

Lincoln walkers will follow the same route as last year. We will make
two rounds, so if you only wish to walk around the route once, you can
pop back into home base. Or if you need a momentary break, you can slip
in and right back out to continue walking.

Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided by individual chapters and
divisions. Bottled water will be available as well.

Information for the Scottsbluff walk is as follows:

. Date: Saturday, May 4, 2013

. Time: Registration at 9:00 a.m., Registration for chili
cook-off 9 to 11 a.m., walk 10 to 11:30 a.m., lunch noon to 4 p.m.

. Location: Pioneer Park

The Scottsbluff walk will be approximately two miles, but if you don't
wish to walk that far, an adjoining track will allow walkers to
participate with a shorter route. A vehicle will also be available for
anyone requiring a ride back to home base.

There will be a $5 fee for entrance in the chili cook-off, and a charge
of $5 per plate for lunch.

Chili judging will begin at 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served
starting at noon. Victory Underground will provide entertainment for
walkers in the park, and door prizes will be drawn during the afternoon
portion.

Registration for both walks is $30 this year.

Now walkers, here's some exciting, new additions for both walks.

Do not worry about cramming another item of NFBN apparel into your
crowded closet. We've changed the prizes this year along with the prize
guidelines. The top three fundraisers will be awarded either
registration or banquet fees for the 2013 NFBN convention. The prizes
are as follows:

. First place: Registration and banquet

. Second place: Banquet

. Third place: Registration

And perhaps the following is the most exciting addition. For every $100
raised, you will have the opportunity to throw a pie in the face of a
chosen NFBN board member during our state convention.

Yes folks, you read correctly, you can throw a pie at any board member
when you raise $100. And for every hundred over that, you get another
pie to throw at the same person or you can choose a board member per
pie.

So raise those funds, Nebraskans, and cream the competition.

This year we are also offering a PayPal method of payment.

You can have a website page created with a PayPal button to make
fundraising simpler. If you wish to have this option available, contact
Mike Hansen at mhanson4 at gmail.com.

If you have any questions, contact your local chapter president or Jamie
Forbis, NFBN walk coordinator at jkforbis at hotmail.com.

Now we need you to get out there and raise some funds. Remember, funds
raised assist our affiliate and organization as a whole. The following
are just some of the programs and efforts funds go towards:

. Funds contribute to both our affiliate and national academic
scholarships.

. Funds are used to continue the free white cane program.

. Funds assist in material and events promoting Braille education
including the BELL program.

Let's make 2013 a banner year. Beat the winter blues by raising
important funs for our big red affiliate.

Bridgit

Sincerely,
Bridgit Kuenning-Pollpeter, editor, Slate & Style
