Greetings All,

I am writing to encourage your attendance at the upcoming budget hearing for
the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired. This hearing is
critically important, as proposed budget reductions could result in the
elimination of the Support Service Provider program currently serving the
Omaha area.

The Support Service Provider, or SSP, program provides trained individuals
who assist people who are deaf blind by offering access to visual and
environmental information, human guide services, and support for community
participation. SSPs do not make decisions for individuals or act as
caregivers. Instead, they provide the access needed for people who are deaf
blind to participate independently in daily life, employment, education, and
community activities.

If this program is cut, individuals who are deaf blind will lose a vital
service that helps reduce isolation and supports independence and safety in
the community. For many, SSP services are the difference between being able
to engage fully in the community or being forced to stay home.

The budget hearing will take place on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, starting
at 1:30 p.m. in Room 1524 of the State Capitol Building. Your presence can
make a real difference. Attending the hearing sends a strong message about
the importance of maintaining funding for programs that support independence
and access for the blind.

Thank you and I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Jamie K. Richey, President
