<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black;mso-fareast-language:ES">We are happy to share with you this important international study about pain that concerns our community: the study Let’s Make Pain
Visible (or MAPAVI). The MAPAVI study has been developed by a multidisciplinary group of researchers, healthcare professionals, and individuals with different blind-related conditions. It is led by Dr. Jordi Miró, Professor of Health Psychology at the University
Rovira-i-Virgili (Tarragona, Spain) and Director of the Chair in Pediatric Pain. This study has been reviewed by the research advisory council of the National Federation of the Blind, and approved for participation in by NFB members.

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black;mso-fareast-language:ES">A little bit of background: Research has shown that blind or low-vision individuals are more sensitive to pain, and are more vigilant
to painful stimuli. Research has also shown that hypersensitivity and hypervigilance are risk factors for chronic pain.</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;mso-fareast-language:ES">
<span style="color:black">Even so, there is very little specific research on the problems caused by chronic pain in people with visual problems, and much less on the most appropriate treatments, or on the development of treatments, for the needs of our community.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:115%"><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black;mso-fareast-language:ES">A little bit about the objectives: The MAPAVI project aims to find
data that will enable the following questions to be solved: 1) What are the most common pain problems?, and 2) What treatment needs do blind or low-vision individuals have? The objective is to develop better treatments, including those supported by mobile
applications, that can improve the quality of life of individuals with visual disabilities who also suffer from pain problems.
