Research Participation Request: Exploring the Research Workflows
of Blind and Low-Vision Researchers

The below research participant solicitation is being provided for
informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no
involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to
our research mission.

Research Title: Exploring the Research Workflows of Blind and
Low-Vision Researchers

Being conducted by: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Purpose of the Study
Our goal is to identify the aspect(s) of
research that may be particularly challenging, to offer community-driven
solutions that enhance the accessibility and usability of research
workflows, all with and for blind and low-vision researchers. Community
perspectives will help inform the future of inclusive research practices
and tool design, and iterate towards a community of practice that is
cognizant and accepting of all workflows and paths towards scientific
contribution.

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

Participants will complete an online survey hosted on Qualtrics
about their use of research tools. The survey will explore their current
usage patterns, accessibility challenges they face, and strategies they
employ when using research tools in their academic or industry work.
Survey completion will take 15 to 20 minutes.

Proposed Participant Compensation
No compensation will be given
for the online survey hosted on Qualtrics about their use of research
tools. The survey should take between 15 and 20 minutes to complete. This
is a voluntary research study, and you are free to end the survey at any
time. All responses are anonymous and will be kept confidential.

At the end of the survey, you will be given the option to participate in
an optional, paid follow-up interview ($30 Amazon e-gift card should you
complete the entire interview) with a member of the research team.

Blind And Low-Vision Researchers Conduct Research? We Want To Hear From
You!

We are a team of researchers at the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) who are interested in learning more about how
blind and low-vision (BLV) researchers conduct research. More
specifically, we would like to learn more about how the BLV research
community carries out each stage of the research process, from start to
finish. We're interested in the tools and strategies you might use to
carry out your research, and what obstacles, if any, prevent you from
effortlessly

Our goal is to identify the aspect(s) of research that may be
particularly challenging, to offer community-driven solutions that
enhance the accessibility and usability of research workflows. Your
invaluable perspective will help inform the future of inclusive research
practices and tool design.

To be eligible to participate, you must:

- Be 18 years of age or older.

- Identify as blind or have low vision.

- Be actively engaged in research or have engaged in research in any
academic discipline (e.g., graduate student, post-doctoral fellow,
faculty member, or independent researcher).

Participation involves completing an online survey (link:

about your perspectives on and experiences with the research process. The
online survey does not have compensation associated with it.

At the end of the survey, you will be given the option to
