CBVI Benefactor: Caroline Rose Foster

This noted philanthropist, and CBVI consumer, came to NJ soon after the 
death of her mother, at the age of 4, with her father, Charles Grant Foster, 
a NY commodities broker. For 98 years of her life she lived in what was 
originally known as "The Willows", a palatial Morristown home built in 1854 
by the great-grandson of Paul Revere. When built, "The Willows" was situated 
on 88 acres of land but Foster expanded the property to 188 acres, turned it 
into a successful farm with an impressive herd of jersey cows, and changed 
the name to "Fosterfields"

When Caroline inherited the farm in 1927 she continued farming on a limited 
basis. Remaining single throughout her life, Caroline devoted much of her 
time to involvement in local civic, political, and historical organizations. 
A socialite who enjoyed the nightlife of New York City and a self-described 
"First Women's Libber", she was an avid hunter and fisherman who favored 
sports and outdoor activities over traditional "women's roles". She also 
enjoyed carpentry and constructed her own cottage, "The Temple of Abiding 
Peace" which still stands on the grounds of Fosterfields.

When she died at the age of 102 in 1979, she bequeathed her estate to the 
Morris County Parks Commission and you can visit Fosterfields, which remains 
a working farm and museum. Caroline also stipulated in her will that a 
monetary gift be given to NJCBVI with the stipulation that the principle 
amount be invested so as to establish a perpetual fund for the provision of 
assistance to NJ residents who are blind or visually impaired. Each year an 
outstanding CBVI student receives a college scholarship in her name from the 
Board of Trustees.

Below are some photos of Ms. Foster, her estate at Fosterfields, and her 
self-built cottage, but, if you are ever in the board room here on the 6th 
floor, there's a photo of her, taken shortly before she passed away. She's 
wearing her signature bow tie and a sporty wide brimmed Panama hat. The 
picture exudes her personality - a woman who lived her life to the fullest, 
her way.
