Apologies for having to resend, the dates for volunteering are Thursday,
November 9, Friday, November 10, Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November
12.
Greetings,
Are you looking for a short-term event in
Spata, Kathleen
to serve your community as a volunteer or an SSP? Or perhaps you have
colleagues, students or others in your circle of acquaintances who are
seeking credit for professional development or community service hours.
If so, the National Federation of the Blind of New Jersey has just the
opportunity for volunteering. Our 47th annual state convention is set for
November 9-12 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Edison
The NFBNJ is one of 52 state (as well as DC and Puerto Rico) affiliates of
the National Federation of the Blind. We’re the blind, speaking for
ourselves, in this country’s largest civil rights and advocacy
organization. Every day, with love, hope and determination we raise
expectations of our blindness community so we all can live the life we want.
Qualifications to volunteer at our convention? You must be 18 years old,
have time available from Nov. 9 to the 12th, background checks a plus. So
are a sense of humor and a desire to be helpful. This will be our first
convention at this hotel and some of us may be a little rusty using our
independent travel skills to get to the various meeting spaces and the
exhibit hall. Your main function as a volunteer will be to guide after
inquiring whether the person in question needs or wants assistance.
Conventioneers
may need assistance with;
- Locating the hotel entrance upon arrival or departure
- Locating the hotel registration line or desk
- Managing the hotel registration/checkout line
- Identifying who is next in line
- Locating the elevators and restrooms
- Navigating the lobby and Convention area
- You also might be escorting conventioneers to the lobby elevator but
that’s as far as you’ll go together – your guide services end at the
elevator, not at an individual’s hotel room.
Following is a schedule for times when volunteers are most needed. You can
choose more than one session if desired. We will have an Orientation and
Q&A Session via Zoom on Monday, October 23 at 7PM to answer any questions.
Details on joining the call will be sent on Friday, October 20 to all who
have registered to volunteer.
