Blind and Low-Vision Audiences in Virtual Reality Musical Performances

Research Title: Evaluating Omnidirectional Audio 
Description Framework for Blind and Low-Vision 
Audiences in Virtual Reality Musical Performances



Being conducted by: New Jersey Institute of Technology






Purpose of the Study

This study explores how three enhanced 
omnidirectional audio-description techniques 
(spatial audio descriptions, view-dependent 
descriptions, and AI-powered conversational audio 
descriptions) affect spatial awareness, 
immersion, engagement, and comprehension for 
blind and low-vision users experiencing 360° 
virtual reality musical performances.  We hope to 
examine how these audio description techniques 
support blind and low-vision participants' 
understanding of visual elements and their 
enjoyment of virtual reality musical performances.






Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

Participants will attend a single 60 - 90 minute 
session at New Jersey Institute of Technology. 
They'll don a Meta Quest 2 headset and experience 
three 2 to 3-minute VR musical scenes, each first 
with a traditional audio description, then with 
an enhanced audio description technique. After 
each scene, they'll complete a brief 
questionnaire and a short interview. A practice 
scene and headset training are provided at the start.






Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, each participant receives a $50 Amazon gift card upon completion.
