<DIV>Greetings, NFBNJ members,</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>We just found out that Senator Corey Booker has agreed to sign onto a
letter</DIV>
<DIV>of opposition of HR 620. When you call him, please thank him for doing
that.</DIV>
<DIV>This will encourage him to follow through. There are 26 other Senators
who</DIV>
<DIV>will be signing that letter. Unfortunately, New Jersey's other
Senator,</DIV>
<DIV>Robert Menendez, is not one of them. Please contact Senator
Menendez's</DIV>
<DIV>office and ask him to add his name to those in opposition. Also ask
your</DIV>
<DIV>family, friends and neighbors to do the same. His Washington office
phone</DIV>
<DIV>number is (202) 224-4744. For his New Jersey offices, the number in
Newark</DIV>
<DIV>is (973) 645-3030, and the Barrington office phone number is (856)
757-5353.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>When you call, please mention the reasons we are opposed to a Senate
version</DIV>
<DIV>of HR 620. Let him know that the ADA Education and Reform Act would
force
a</DIV>
<DIV>person with a disability who has been denied access to a public</DIV>
<DIV>accommodation to first dotify the offending business within two months.
The</DIV>
<DIV>business would then have an additional two months not to fix the
violation,</DIV>
<DIV>but to make "substantial progress" toward addressing it before legal
action</DIV>
<DIV>could be taken. This means that a barrier to equal accommodation
could</DIV>
<DIV>remain in place for an additional 120 days with no guarantee that it
would</DIV>
<DIV>be fully remedied. This would completely gut the Americans with
Disabilities</DIV>
<DIV>Act, a law that has been around for 27 years, and would allow
discrimination</DIV>
<DIV>of the disabled by the business community. For the blind, this would
include</DIV>
<DIV>such things as continued inaccessibility of online shopping and
banking</DIV>
<DIV>sites, loss of privacy regarding medical information, and the inability
to</DIV>
<DIV>order from a restaurant menu independently.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>As you can see, our advocacy is vital. Thank you for your efforts in
making</DIV>
<DIV>sure we continue to live the lives we want.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Take care,</DIV>
