<DIV>I am excited to announce that VISTAS Education Partners and the
National
</DIV>
<DIV>Federation of the Blind of New Jersey (NFBNJ) are joining forces to
host
the </DIV>
<DIV>2nd annual NJ Regional Braille Challenge. Please see below for details
about </DIV>
<DIV>this unique opportunity braille enrichment opportunity, and spread the
word!</DIV>
<DIV>What: New Jersey Regional Braille Challenge</DIV>
<DIV>When: Saturday, February 22, 2019 9:00 am to 3:00
pm</DIV>
<DIV>Who: Any blind or visually impaired student in grades 1 - 12+ who can
read
</DIV>
<DIV>and write braille is eligible to participate in the Braille
Challenge.</DIV>
<DIV>Where: The Reformed Church of Highland Park, 19 South 2nd Ave,
Highland </DIV>
<DIV>Park, NJ</DIV>
<DIV>Registration: Complete and return the NJ Regional Permission Form to
the
</DIV>
<DIV>email address provided</DIV>
<DIV>The deadline to register is Jan 15th. Space is limited. Early
registration
</DIV>
<DIV>is strongly recommended.</DIV>
<DIV>About: The Braille Challenge is the only academic competition of its
kind
in </DIV>
<DIV>North America for students who are blind or visually impaired. Braille
</DIV>
<DIV>Institute developed the Braille Challenge to motivate students to
practice
</DIV>
<DIV>and hone their braille literacy skills, which are essential to academic
and
</DIV>
<DIV>employment success.</DIV>
<DIV>All contestants are divided into five categories and tested on
fundamental
</DIV>
<DIV>braille skills such as reading comprehension, spelling, speed and
accuracy,
</DIV>
<DIV>proofreading, and charts and graphs. Contests are proctored by
volunteer
</DIV>
<DIV>Teachers of the Visually Impaired and scored locally by volunteer
</DIV>
<DIV>transcribers, based on national guidelines.</DIV>
<DIV>More than 1,400 braille readers across participate in regional Braille
</DIV>
<DIV>Challenge competitions from January through the end of March throughout
the
</DIV>
<DIV>United States and Canada, but only the top 50 students (10 in each
category) </DIV>
<DIV>with the highest scores are invited to Los Angeles for the final
round -
two </DIV>
<DIV>days of competition, camaraderie and fun. The 2020 Braille Challenge
</DIV>
<DIV>National Finals will happen on June 26 and 27 at the University of
Southern
</DIV>
<DIV>California.</DIV>
<DIV>The NJ Regional Braille Challenge will include workshops for </DIV>
<DIV>parents/guardians, food and fun for participants, and guest speakers!
</DIV>
