As many of you know, yesterday, July 26, was the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. To honor this anniversary, the Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus in Congress held a special event on Capitol
Hill where the current caucus chair, Rep. Jim Langevin of Rhode Island, announced his successors.

In case you may be wondering what a congressional caucus is, and how it differs from a congressional committee, let’s take a brief detour. A caucus is a group of members of Congress who meet with the goal of pursuing common legislative
objectives. Typically, they will have bipartisan membership, but not always. Additionally, while a caucus may seem like just another committee, caucuses have no official jurisdictional authority. Effectively, a caucus is a brainstorming session for members
of Congress who are passionate about a specific issue.

The Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus was created during the 107th Congress and, as its name suggests, focuses on resolving disability issues in a bipartisan manner. Representative Langevin was a key figure in the creation of the caucus during
the 107th Congress, and given his retirement at the end of the current Congress, he chose to announce the co-chairs for the caucus going forward. The next co-chairs of the Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus will be Representative Debbie Dingell of Michigan and
Representative Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania. We look forward to their leadership, and we wish Representative Langevin a happy retirement.
