Health and Wellness
Healthy Lifestyles: Your Health, Your Choice is an evidence-based holistic health and wellness curriculum designed for and by folks who experience Disabilities. The group meets weekly to explore all the aspects of a healthy and fulfilling life through social, emotional, and physical health and by leading a healthy life centered around personal beliefs, values, and meaningful activities. The sessions are universally designed to be accessed by folks with diverse skills and abilities, and are facilitated by a mixed abilities team trained through OHSU UCEDD. During each session, the group will explore a component of health, practice wellness activities, discuss strategies to advocate for health and wellness needs, and allow time and space for social health and support. We focus on celebrating our unique minds and bodies, honoring interdependence, and empowering folks to be informed about their needs and confident in expressing them. Our Healthy Lifestyle community is a safe space for connection and growth where everyone is both a teacher and a learner! Fall/Winter 2021/2022 Healthy Lifestyles meetups are on Mondays from 2 - 4 PM on Zoom.

Opportunities for Learning and Justice Work
Oregon’s State Independent Living Council (SILC) is recruiting qualified members!
What is the SILC?: A mandated coordinating body for the Independent Living Program, appointed by the Governor, consisting of individuals with disabilities and their community partners.
What does the SILC do?: Jointly develops and signs the State Plan for Independent Living with Oregon’s Network of Centers for Independent Living (CILs), after identifying statewide needs and getting public input. Monitors the plan’s progress and implementation. Evaluates the plan’s effectiveness. Works with other disability service programs to improve coordination between different services, making them more useful to people with disabilities. This includes addressing service gaps and reducing duplication of services.
What are the responsibilities of SILC members?: Prepare for/attend four quarterly meetings (half or full day), plus a few hours to review materials in preparation. In-person meetings are usually in Salem 3 times per year. The 4th meeting may be where a Center for Independent Living can be visited. Virtual options are available when travel is not possible. Respond to emails and other Council communications in a timely manner. Engage in the work of the Council. This may include a committee or project work group. Time involvement for committees or work groups differs by the group, but is often at least two hours per month. Contribute, as able, to SILC tasks. Examples: staffing exhibits or representing the SILC in other groups.
Who is the SILC looking for?: Individuals with a disability who do not work for the State or a Center for Independent Living are particularly necessary. Current gaps in expertise include communities of color and people from regions outside Portland Metro, Salem and Jackson/Josephine counties, though we are accepting applications from all areas. The best members will have some knowledge about the services Centers for Independent Living provide.

Come check out a new art exhibit called “3 Floods, Photographs by R.J. Baynum Jr.” that is a collaboration between Living Studios, CEI and OUTPOST1000 !
There will be an opening reception on Thursday, November 18, 4-8pm
Exhibit closes: 12/10/21 (viewing after reception by appointment only)
Location: OUTPOST1000 entrance is on Corner of 4th and SW Monroe (formerly CEI ArtWorks)
About this exhibit:
Corvallis photographer R.J. Baynum Jr. has been creating photo narratives for many years. Severe flooding in the early 2000’s left him without a home and many irreplaceable belongings were ruined including his cameras and professional equipment. Fortunately, R.J. was able to salvage a number of slides which he kept safe in the homes of friends. The photos in this exhibit date prior to 2004 and show a world of abundance and beauty where human presence is limited yet keenly felt.
Bio narrative:
I wandered to my Beloved, Corvallis from Wilmington, Delaware many years ago. These photos are from my Portfolio which I kept safe after 3 floods and bad mistakes during 30 years of traveling and living in and around… this Country. I am a retired Physically Disabled Army Vet living on SSDI in recovery who plays Blues Harmonica passionately while hanging with my friends at Blues Jams. I also take Nature and Fine Art Photographs. I am active in charity and community events and volunteer as a Blues Rock DJ at KORC 105.9 FM and I am also an active Homeless Advocate.

Pandemic Support
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, there is an increasing need to understand and respond to long COVID. More than 45 million confirmed coronavirus infections have been reported in the U.S. and more than half of COVID-19 patients experienced long COVID, called Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), six months after recovery. Long COVID conditions such as pain, difficulty breathing, hypertension, and fatigue can be debilitating. Living with long COVID has upended daily life for millions of Americans and it can be difficult to get support and care for symptoms. Vaccination against COVID-19 can reduce the likelihood of developing long COVID and can even help people with long COVID feel better.
This webinar from The National Institute for Health Care Management will bring together experts to discuss the latest research on long COVID and strategies to support individuals with the conditions. Speakers will discuss:
* The national effort to understand, treat, and prevent the long-term effects of COVID-19
* New and emerging data on long COVID in different populations broken down by demographic factors
* Strategies to address the impact of long COVID on the health care system through federal policy recommendations and payment models
* A health plan’s efforts to connect individuals suffering from long COVID to care and other resources.
An ASL interpreter will be available!
