McClain. Dan moved adoption Eric seconded. Approved without objection.
Dan, Lois, Mickie, Susan, Gina, and Debbie attended the 2022 Commons Fest
on behalf of the Chapter. A friend of Mickie’s, Scott, helped put up the
canopy. The group made three contacts of potential new members. One
individual would like the chapter to visit to a school. The group also met
a family with a “cortically” blind student. Child is 4. The group handed
out literature and Kernal books.
Susan Day talked about her experience as an Occupational Therapist working
with a child who was cortically blind. Debbie explained her understanding
of what “cortically blind” is. Mickie looked it up and it is part of
cerebral blindness. Essentially the eyes are not damaged but rather it is
an issue of the brain not processing what the eyes are seeing.
Debbie indicated that we received a thank you note for our donation to
See3d. Mickie read the thank you note. The note referenced “money
braillers”. The question was asked what are money braillers used for. It
was discussed that they are devices used for making temporary braille on
currency. This lead to a discussion about how you can fold currency to tell
bills apart. We also talked about the currency reader on Seeing A! and
other apps that can be used on a cell phone to read currency.
The chapter also discussed the OSSB (Ohio State School for the Blind WPA
(Work Projects Administration) models and the refurbishing project.
Our new members introduced themselves. Pat talked about her experiences of
having difficulty learning to live with blindness and dealing with others
being uncomfortable with her blindness. Eric and Debbie talked about how
you can learn to live a full and rich life as a blind person through using
alternative techniques.
The Chapter inducted Pat and Dave as new members.
Mother Stewart’s f undraiser scheduled for November 12, 2022, fundraiser.
Looking for auction and door prize donations. Debbie and Mickie will go
around to previous donors and try to get donations. We earn donations on
beer sales. We also will have entertainment, including Gail Cowan’s
husband, and JW Smith will be invited. Eric asked if there will be a
letter we can use to solicit donations. Debbie said there will indeed be a
letter/flyer.
The NFB of Ohio annual State Convention will be in Independence Ohio
November 4, 5, 6 (Cleveland). Mickie moved to donate $200 cash for
convention door prizes. Eric seconded. Todd moved $200 hundred for
lottery tickets/gift cards to be put on the tree for the auction. Arlie
seconded. Both motions carried without objection.
Gavel Report: Todd will write up the Gavel Report.
The Wagners are moving to South Carolina and have invited the chapter to an
August 26th garden party from 5-9.
We held a discussion on Autonomous Vehicles. Part of the discussion
revolved around a new Congressional Caucus sponsored by Ohio-5th
Congressman Bob Latta. This caucus will work to promote autonomous vehicle
policy discussions, including discussions of accessibility for blind and
low vision users, among Congressional representatives.
The 2023 National Convention will be held July 1-6 in Houston Texas.
President Baker appointed the Nominating Committee for the Chapter’s 2022
elections. The committee will be Eric Duffy, Dan O’keefe, and Arlie Ray.
They will bring a slate of officers to September meeting.
The Chapter watched the New York Times audio described podcast, “What a
Legally Blind Person Can See”. We discussed the good and the bad of the
podcast.
The next Chapter meeting will be Saturday, September 10, 2022.
