National Federation of the Blind of Ohio, Springfield Chapter Minutes
Date: April 15, 2023
Location: Clark County Public Library, Gayer Room
Those present:

Reports and Branding
The NFB branding message and pledge were read.
The Treasurer’s report was read. The ending balance for April was $6,161.78. Aleeha moved, and Arlie seconded, to approve the report. The motion passed.
The Secretary’s report was read. Mickey moved, and Arlie seconded, to approve the minutes as amended, and the motion passed.
Updates
It was noted that the Ohio affiliate has a new treasurer, Kathy Legg, from the Greater Akron chapter. There is also a new affiliate Secretary, who is Annette Lutz.
Joe Geoffrey had a bad fall and will not be in attendance this month. Plans were made to place a call to him, as he is currently in the hospital.
Unfinished Business
Membership Ideas
Pat presented an idea to attend a meeting of groups in the Dayton area who provide support systems to others, such as those with disabilities or other groups in need of assistance.
Ideas were discussed regarding expanding membership, including providing literature to ophthalmologists. A committee was formed to work on a letter and advertising flyer which can be distributed to prospective members. Aleeha, Pat, Gina, and Debbie will serve on the committee.
Accessible Prescription Webinar
Accessible pharmacy services are hosting a webinar on glaucoma, June 16 at 12:00 PM. They provide braille and large print prescription labels, and are based in Pennsylvania. Their phone number is 888-633-7007. The information provided within the accessible label is everything on your medication, including the text on the papers attached to prescription packaging. They also serve people with other disabilities besides blindness. Registration for the webinar is open, which can be accessed from their Facebook page, as well as their website, www.Accessiblepharmacy.com.
New Business
National Convention
Pat and Dave will be attending National convention. Mickey moved to supplement the funds provided to Pat and Dave by the Jernigan scholarship, whether or not they receive it, with $400. Arlie seconded and the motion passed.
Flying Pig Marathon
Pat and Dave have submitted a check to the chapter for the tickets they sold, and Debbie has sent an $80 check from the chapter to the treasurer, which is a collection of all tickets that were sold.
Membership Portal
Mickey and Debbie have received a letter regarding the national membership portal. There were several errors that needed to be corrected. We have been advised that the edits have been made, and membership information should be correct.
Braille Monitor
Methods were discussed for subscribing to the Braille Monitor. You can subscribe by phone or online. You can also receive the magazine by email, in print, on a thumb drive, and in Braille. Finally, it is also issued as a podcast, which can be accessed from any podcast app.
New Screen Reader Book
There is a new book out by David Kingsbury that discusses JAWS, NVDA and Narrator. It is available from the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, MA.
Presidential Release
The April 2023 Presidential release was played.
BELL Program
The Ohio BELL program will be held August 6-11 at the Ohio School for the Blind. We would like to think about any contributions the chapter would like to make to that program.
Seeing Eye App Demonstration
Aleeha did a demonstration of The Seeing Eye Advocacy app for iPhone.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be May 21, 2023 in the Gayer room at 10:30 AM.
